Jerry Bridges has lived the Christ-centered life that hes long taught and written about. Ive personally benefited immensely from his writings on Gods holiness and providence. Years ago I led a group of men in a rich study of his book The Joy of Fearing God. Having several meals and conversations with Jerry allowed me to witness firsthand a Jesus-exalting humility that has stayed with me as much as his writings. I thank God for Jerry Bridges and I am thrilled at the release of God Took Me by the Hand!
I have benefited greatly from the writings of Jerry Bridgesand now I have benefited greatly from his life story. You will be thrilled by the working of providence in Jerrys life and reminded of how it is working, even now, in your own life.
Jerry Bridges is not new to me. But his story is. As I read through his book, one word kept recurring to me... authentic. If ever there was a time when this world needs to read, and hear, from men who are authentic, I believe that is now. As a matter of fact, those are the only books I have endeavored to read for the last eighteen years, and it has paid big dividends in my life and thinking. This book fits in that category.
Once again, Jerry Bridges gives us a modern day classic. In God Took Me By the Hand he paints a brilliant picture of the providence of God. In the most beautiful and personal way, Bridges weaves his life story through this compelling and definitive work on Gods divine plan. Providence is this truth that God, in His supernatural way, nudges us toward His good and exhilarating plan for our lives. Bridges reminds that in spite of all the chaos, all our mistakes and shortcomings, Hes got the whole world in His hands even better Hes got your one and most important life in His hands.

To our grandchildren
Elise, Joseph, Joshua,
David, Brendan, Hannah, Sarah
With the prayer that in the course of time, each of you will understand and appreciate the providence of God in your life.
Preface
The pages that follow were, in their original draft, intended to hopefully become a published book explaining and exalting the providence of God. But the more I worked on it, the more I sensed it was too personal to become a book, so I changed my mental audience to family and close friends. However, some folks at NavPress read my story and thought it could be useful to a larger audience, so here it is. Whether you know me or not, then, I pray that this book will be helpful to you to see how the providence of God can work in the life of a very ordinary individual.
I am indebted to Don Simpson, my longtime friend and editor, for his valuable help on the manuscript. I also want to thank Connie Trautman, my part-time administrative assistant, for her work in typing the manuscript, including the many changes I made over several months. And finally to Kris Wallen, a vice president at NavPress, for the continual encouragement and help she has been to me over the last few years.

Introduction
December 4, 2009, I celebrated my eightieth birthday. The year leading up to that was a time of questioning whether I would make an eightieth birthday. No one in my extended family on either side aunts, uncles, cousins, or parents had ever lived to be eighty. My older brother who I thought would break the eighty barrier died three weeks after his seventy-ninth birthday. But I did make it, and thanks to my family and my good friend Chris Thifault, it was a great celebration.
The year following, 2010, I did a lot of reflecting on Gods working in my life for eighty years. As I reflected on His leading, this expression kept coming to my mind: When I was seventeen years old, it seemed as if God took me by the hand and said, Come with Me. And for more than sixty-five years, God has, as it were, continued to hold my hand and lead me in the path He has marked out for me.
This does not mean that life has been a great success all these years. There have been lots of times when life has been hard and discouraging, but through it all, I see Gods hand drawing me along the path He ordained for me before I was born. Because my growing up years were years of economic survival, I never dreamed big dreams nor aspired to do great things. All I wanted to do was make a decent living and be a good Christian. I had no idea what this would look like in the future. Humanly speaking, I certainly was not a candidate to be someone used by God as has happened.
The pages that follow are a record of the sixty-five-year journey of being led by Gods hand. My personal story is not important except to illustrate the providence of God, what I call the invisible hand of God, in terms that twenty-first-century readers can understand. My perspective of present-day Christendom is that very few people have any understanding of the providence of God and so fail to appreciate Gods continued care and action in their lives. For those unfamiliar with the expression the providence of God, I will explain it in chapter 3.
