Introduction
What is the basic definition of a law? Noah Websters 1828 Dictionary defines a law as that which is laid, set, or fixed.1 Another definition I like is that a law is a principle based on the predictable consequences of an act. For example, physical laws tell you that if you throw a ball up in the air, it will fall back to the ground. There is only one way the ball will always fall once thrown up and that is down. A certain act will yield a certain result.
Another definition Noah Webster gives for a law is, a rule, particularly an established or a permanent rule prescribed by the supreme power of a state to its subjects for regulating their actions, particularly their social actions.2 In simplest terms, a law has the power to govern. Governments pass laws that lay down, set, or fix what is legal and what is illegal. The laws of a natural government can change as society and culture change. However, in the kingdom, Gods laws, spiritual and natural, cannot be changed.
Lets look at a natural law: the law of gravity. As a little child, we found out quickly what happens when we lose our balance or our footing. The law of gravity brought us right down on a part of our body God padded especially for that! As we grew up, our respect and understanding for the law of gravity grew, and eventually we learned how to work it to our advantage and to stay safe.
Sir Isaac Newton discovered the law of gravity which basically says that if you drop something, it will always go down; it will never go up. This law also says if you drop something of a given weight from a certain height, like from the top of a three-story building, it will reach the ground in a certain length of time, no matter who you are and no matter where on this Earth you are when you drop it.
The Bible tells us that everything we observe in creation speaks of our Creator.
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.
Romans 1:19-20
All laws created by God reflect His character and nature. When we explore the natural world, we cant help but see our Creator in His creation. For example, the law of gravityjust like Godis no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34). It works for everyone: male or female, black or white, rich or poor, saved or unsaved.
I had to learn several physical laws when I joined the Air Force and became a pilot. As a new recruit, they sent me to ground school. It was called ground school because it taught us all about flying on the ground, before we actually flew in the air. There was a good reason for that. By the time we got up in the air with our flight instructor, we needed to know what was causing us to flyand what could cause us to crash! The purpose of ground school was to prepare us to fly successfully.
In ground school they taught us there are four basic laws that govern flyingthe law of thrust, the law of gravity, the law of lift, and the law of drag. Thrust takes you forward, gravity pulls you down, lift draws you up, and drag holds you back. Then they began teaching us how an airplane operates within these laws so it can take off, fly, and land.
Engineers have discovered how these laws work so they can use this knowledge to design all different types of airplanes for all kinds of purposes. They know exactly how each plane is going to fly and what it is capable of doing. Whats interesting is that these physical or natural laws existed in the Garden of Eden, but it took mankind until the beginning of the twentieth century to figure out how these four laws would work together to benefit mankind in what we know today as air travel.
When we first got to ground school, most of us were still ignorant of these four laws. The instructors would take us up in a little, single-engine Cessna 172 propeller plane. They would do some stunts to shake us up a bit, and some of the guys would get sick. The instructors made sure each of us had a bag with us! Young recruits got sick mostly because of fear. However, the more they understood about how the laws worked to make the airplane take off, fly, and land, the less afraid they were.
In flight training we learned these laws on the ground, so that when we got into the air we wouldnt be afraid or anxious. Instead, we would understand how and why we were flying. Now I understand that if I generate enough power in the plane to reach a certain speed on the runway, that airplane will lift off every time. It doesnt matter if it is a Boeing 747 jumbo or just a little single engine Piper Cub. But people who dont understand those laws can board one of those big birds and bite their nails the entire time because they have no understanding of the laws that govern them at that moment. To them, its a mystery.
This is why God tells us in the Bible,
Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding. Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
Proverbs 4:5-8
In this book we are going to get wisdom and understanding about another law: the law of confession. The law of confession is one of the basic, fundamental laws that govern this universe and determine our destiny. We are going to study it and discover timeless truths that will give us understanding and take all the fear out of our hearts, so that we will walk in a display of wisdom and power that we never imagined possible.
Because many people have no revelation of the power of their words, they have caused themselves undo hardship. Many people failed when things became difficult, only because they lost their confession. The Bible plainly teaches that, Death and life are in the power of the tongue (Proverbs 18:21). In other words, your words reflect your fate, not the devil, not your nation or background, not your relatives or circumstances.
When you believe and speak words that harmonize with what God has already spoken or declared, you release a force to which everything in the universe has to adjust. The power of the tongue is far beyond anything we can naturally perceive. Thinking positively is always good. Its always better to think positively than to think negatively. It will put you in a better frame of mind, but if that is all you do, it is not going to change anything.
