CHAPTER ONE
THE HISTORY OF GENGHIS KHAN
Genghis was a 13 th century leader or rather warrior in central Asia and is actually the one who founded the Mongol empire which is recognized as the largest empires in history. By the time Genghis died his empire controlled a large amount of territory in central Asia and china. Genghis Khan was born in 1167 but the Mongol tradition claims that he was born in 1162 as a big part of his early life is not described he was the son of the chief of the yakka Mongols. His father was assassinated when he was around nine years old leaving the family at a very vulnerable position. It is said that the father was poisoned by Rival Tatars. It was his mother who kept the family together and ensured that the family survived in the desert lands of Mongolia. This therefore explains that Genghis Khan rose from a humble beginning and established the largest empire in history. The main major thing about Genghis khan is that he founded the Mongol empire thus becoming one of the most feared conquerors of all time. Genghis Khan was born along the banks of the Onon River and was originally known as Temujin meaning blacksmith or of iron but he got the name Genghis Khan in 1206 when he was proclaimed the leader of the Mongols during a tribal meeting called Kurultai traditionally Khan refers to leader or ruler.
Genghis had a rough childhood from an early age as he was forced to contend with the brutality of life on the Mongolian steppe. According to history he grew up hunting and foraging for him to survive and it has also been mentioned that he may have killed his half brother in a dispute over food. It is said that many people were killed during his invasions but he also granted religious freedom to his subjects, abolished torture, encouraged trade and also created the first international postal system.
Much focus is on Genghis Khan because he was able to establish a very large empire during his time in life and also his armies is believed to have conquered more land and also killed or captured more people than other armies did or any other emperor in the history of the world. As you read through his history you realize that he was hardened by his early life because the region he lived there were continuous battles and raids between tribes and clans this forced him to learn how to fight and also kill to survive.
After the dad died Genghis tried to be recognized as the leader of the tribe but was rejected and he married at the age of 16 in order to build a bond with wifes tribe. Borte his wife had four children but Genghis had many more with other wives but it is only his male children with Borte that qualified for succession. Genghis was actually sent to live with his wifes tribe at the age of nine but after some years he discovered that his father was killed by some enemies and it is when he returned home to become the Khan and when he reached home he found out that his family was betrayed and there was another warrior who stood as Khan and kicked his family from the tribe. He did not give up but instead worked towards supporting his family through a horrible winter and through this time he began to plot his revenge on the tartars for killing his father.
We can think of him as a cruel leader but much of what he did was guided by his idea of following reality. The time he was working his way up to becoming a great Mongolian leader was a time when most things were a miss and he used his ways to put things in place. The Mongol tribe was much unorganized and he put all efforts into uniting the various tribes under the Mongol banner. This he was able to achieve in 1206 and it was at this time that he took the name Genghis Khan which refers to universal ruler.
