Premature Ejaculation: The Basics
What Is Premature Ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation (or PE for short) is a dysfunction that normally affects men whereby they orgasm and expel semen after sexual activity, but with very minimal penile stimulation. PE makes you feel like you can't control your ejaculation, and ultimately it means that you ejaculate too soon, usually before you and your partner want.
Current research suggests that the average time for most men between the ages of 18 and 30 years old to ejaculate is about 6 minutes. Typically if you fall below two and a half minutes, then you can be described as experiencing premature ejaculation. While these figures are somewhat subjective, what is most important is whether or not you feel satisfied with the amount of time it takes you to ejaculate.
Premature ejaculation has been recorded as early as the fourth century AD. So this isn't a new dysfunction that's troubling our generation. Our ancestors had to deal with it too. The Kama Sutra (an Indian sex handbook written in the fourth century) states Women love the man whose sexual energy lasts a long time, but they resent a man whose energy ends quickly because they stop before they can reach a climax. So men through the ages have certainly faced the same problem that you are in bed.
How does premature ejaculation occur?
The process of ejaculation normally involves two actions; emission and expulsion. Emission occurs when the sperm (created in the testes) and the semen (created in the seminal vesicles) are transported through the vas deferens to the posterior urethra. The second phase is the expulsion phase. This involves the closure of the bladder neck followed by contractions of the urethra by the pelvic and bulbospongiosas muscles and the intermittent relaxation of external sphincters. Emission is controlled by what are called "sympathetic motor neurons" while expulsion is controlled by "somatic and autonomic motor neurons". These neurons are contained in the spinal cord and are activated in a coordinated manner when the ejaculatory threshold has entered the central nervous system.
When a man reaches his ejaculatory threshold, an ejaculation will subsequently occur. When this threshold is too small, ejaculation occurs too quickly, or prematurely.
Who Is Affected By Premature Ejaculation?
Although it's not often seriously discussed in the media or even during conversations with friends (other than in a joking way), let's be clear: premature ejaculation is a serious problem for many men. It's estimated that about 30% of men suffer from premature ejaculation, though the actual number may be even higher since many men may not want to report that they have a problem. The point here is to remember that you are not alone! Even though it's rarely talked about, don't forget that if you're in a room with 9 other friends, there's a good chance that at least 2 of them will also have PE.
This is highly unfortunate, because when nobody wants to talk about it, finding a solution to the problem can become painfully difficult, and you may get into a cycle of denying that you have a problem at all. Despite the taboo nature of PE, the good thing is that there are actually many solutions out there that men are using successfully. The fact that you have downloaded this book says a lot about your desire to treat PE, and is an excellent first step to take towards correcting it. Again, congratulations for taking action rather than suffering in silence.
Premature ejaculation has been a problem that affects many men. According to the 1948 Kinsey Report, three quarters of men ejaculate two minutes after penetration during half of all their sexual encounters. In research that was carried out in the United States titled "Sex in America" (1999 and 2008), University of Chicago researchers found that between adolescence and age 59, approximately 30% of men reported having experienced PE at least once during the previous 12 months. Indeed, PE affects both young and old, sexually experienced and inexperienced alike. As mentioned before, know that you are not alone.
It is important to note that losing control over ejaculation is normal on occasion. Premature ejaculation becomes a problem if it happens frequently. There are also certain situations where it's very common for a man to ejaculate early, and not necessarily because of PE. For instance, it would be quite normal for someone who is having sex for the first time or who hasn't had sex in a long time to ejaculate quite quickly. Again, occasional losses of control don't necessarily mean that you have a sexual problem.
In the next section we will examine the causes of premature ejaculation.
What Causes Premature Ejaculation
Researchers have not yet discovered the exact cause of premature ejaculation. This hasn't stopped many people from theorizing what the potential reasons are, even though these haven't actually been proven scientifically! You have probably heard some if not all of the following before:
- Masturbating and ejaculating quickly when you were a child due to the fear of being caught by your parents. This results in a habit of ejaculating too quickly.
- Having had very little sex in the past
- Having performance anxiety
- Because of passive aggressiveness
However, as mentioned earlier, none of the above have been proven to cause PE, and in fact, you may not have any of the above issues and yet still have PE.
