Cannabis Growers Resource Guide

On the presumption that every one today is either online or knows someone who is, the following short list of website links has been compiled to help direct growers to seed and growing equipment retailers who have virtually everything a beginner or expert needs to grow a successful crop of sweet and potent buds. Be aware that there is a lot of coming and going where cannabis-related websites are concerned, and any of these links might go offline any time. But they will always be replaced by new cannabis entrepreneurs, and probably most of what a grower needs can be purchased locally.

CHAPTER
Seeds

Step One: Before you plant, you need to plan. This chapter will introduce you to the basic information you need to decide what type of plant you want to grow.

Growing marijuana plants that deliver maximum potency and volume from a minimum number of plants is a series of steps, each of which must be accomplished with some degree of success if a harvest is to be all that it can be. Or if it is to be at all; in my early years, when I was learning the hard way and sorting between sometimes utter nonsense and good, usable advice, there were more than a few years when I was just plain skunked, with not a single sprout surviving to maturity. That hasnt happened to me in a decade or so, but personal observations tell me that it happens more often than not with most beginners, until a lot of them just stop trying to grow cannabis and buy it instead.

It doesnt help that cannabis growers have always had to hide their work, but impatience is a problem within todays instant-gratification societymade that way by computers, microwave ovens, and a multitude of modern conveniences. Today only a few farmers and gardeners still enjoy the experience of helping to create and nurture living things the way almost every American did just three or four generations ago.

As you start your own project, understand that no step in the growing process holds more importance than the seeds from which your crop will grow. Good seeds cannot by themselves guarantee that youll enjoy a bountiful harvest, but seeds that germinate into healthy, vibrant sprouts as soon as they emerge and grow energetically are always preferred. The best seeds can produce plants that are more hardy and more adaptable to various conditions, and they can in a real sense extend the active growing season by producing foliage as quickly as possible, making the most of every day, and growing the biggest buds in the shortest time.

What Kind of Plant Do You Want to Grow: Male vs. Female

Seeds for marijuana plants are sold as either male or female in gender. This distinction is based on the fact that mature plants either pollinate (male) or ovulate (female) seeds for the next generation of plants. There can be hermaphrodite plants with both male and female organs, but for the most part youre going to be buying seeds sold as either one or the other.

The gender of a plant will become more important later on in your project as you get closer to harvesting. But for now, just remember that gender is important because different characteristics will manifest in adult plants based on their individual sex.

There are companies (most of them in Holland, all of them online) that market selectively bred and manipulated feminized seeds that they promise will grow giant female plants with giant chronic buds. These superseeds, often individually blisterpacked and sold for more than a dollar each, are shipped in a plain brown envelope with no markingsalthough possession of marijuana seeds is not itself illegal in most places. Sources for seeds are given at the back of this book.

Pick Your Strain: Hemp and Two Breeds of Marijuana

Cannabis has been grown to smoke or eat for medicinal purposes, and for the purpose of altering its users perception of the world around him since at least 2800 BC, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (7000 BC if you believe some accredited authorities on marijuana).

The USDA lumps all varieties of THC-producing plants under the common genus name Cannabis. Under that title, the agency lists just two subtypes of cannabis: hemp and marijuana.

Hemp

Hemp ( Cannabis ruderalis ), which they call ditchweed, is a subspecies defined by its commercially valuable rope fiber derived from mature male plant stems. Hemp was a cash crop in America until passage of the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act, partially because ditchweed can grow wild in climates where winter doesnt freeze the soil and kill the seeds. According to the USDA, ditchweed has a low THC content and isnt worth smoking. You can tell that the experts who drafted that report arent pot growers; judicious pruning is a technique that Ive always used to increase plants THC content. (My theory is that, like the oils produced by catnip and other mint leaves, THC is an insect repellant whose concentration is increased within a plants tissues in response to a perceived attack.) A plant that grows to maturity unattended will produce the flowers or buds of its gender, but if it has not been eaten by insectsor judiciously prunedjust enough to make it grow stronger, but without retarding its growth, its buds will be seedy and probably not very potent. Cannabis growing in a highway ditch in southern Indiana, for example, has ideal conditions under which to shoot up tall and maximize the distance over which pollen and seeds can spread, and is probably in little danger from plant eaters. It will grow tall and strong, but it wont produce a lot of branches that would in turn sprout a lot of leaves and buds, and it will have little or no need to protect itself from predation by increasing levels of THC within its tissues. But if the same so-called ditchweed were to grow from sprout to maturity with careful pruning, plenty of water, and an occasional feeding, it would grow bushy and yield potent smoke.

Chapter 8 offers more detailed information regarding the process of identifying your plants genders. However, familiarizing yourself with a few of the male and female characteristics now will help you make more informed purchasing decisions when you look for seeds.

Male Plants:

  • Generally taller with less bushy structure
  • Lower THC production compared to females
  • Reproductive structures mature earlier than their female counterparts. These organs first appear as a small appendage protruding from the stalk at the juncture where a new branch is forming. As the plant matures these organs turn into green-white egg-shaped flowers called pollen sacks. Once open, pollen-coated stamens hang down from these sacks. Gravity helps distribute the pollen on smaller, female plants, growing below the males.
