What Is Marijuana?
Marijuana is something that everybody knows about, but that few understand in-depth. As someone who wants to grow marijuana plants of their own, learning as much as you can about marijuana will benefit you. It will help you understand your plants and get the highest yield possible. Marijuana is the main topic that we will be discussing throughout this book, and we will explore it in-depth over the next several chapters. Before moving on, I will define the term marijuana for you.
Marijuana is a term used to describe a type of plant. This plant species has gained immense popularity in the media and politics over the past century. We have seen a drastic increase over the last fifty years, particularly in its global attention. The marijuana plant boasts several medicinal benefits and its intoxicating ones, which is why it has become so popular in recent years.
Marijuana is the name given to the dried leaves, seeds, stems, and flowers of the cannabis plant. This plant can come in many different forms, and there are many different ways to use these forms.
The reason that marijuana is so popular amongst young people is that the consumption of this dried flower leads to the feeling of being "high." Marijuana can be consumed either by inhalation, ingestion, or topical application. For this reason, the government classifies this as a banned substance in much of the world. We characterize a high by the following effects: pleasant feelings of relaxation, euphoria, and fatigue.
Marijuana vs. Cannabis vs. Hemp
We often use the terms cannabis, marijuana, and hemp interchangeably. It is still necessary to understand the differences between the three as we move forward in this book. By understanding this distinction, you will fully grasp the topics in each chapter of this book. In this section, I will outline the differences between Cannabis, Hemp, and Marijuana for you.
Hemp and marijuana are two different forms of the Cannabis plant. Marijuana is what most people speak about when they use casual or "street" terms such as weed, pot, or Mary Jane. Marijuana is the type of cannabis that includes significant amounts of the compound THC, which we will learn about in this book's first chapter.
Hemp, however, is a different form of cannabis. Hemp is different from marijuana in its THC content. THC is the psychoactive chemical in cannabis responsible for giving people a high feeling when they smoke or ingest it.
Hemp is the form of cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC. Hemp is still cannabis, but that it does not have significant levels of psychoactivity when consumed. Since it is THC that is responsible for the effects known as a high, hemp does not lead to a high. Thus, we most often use hemp for things like clothing and medicinal purposes, among other things.
Throughout this book, I will use the word cannabis when speaking about the plant in a general sense. I will use the word marijuana when talking about the plant's form as a recreational drug.
A History of Marijuana
Knowing where the marijuana came from and how people first discovered it could help us to understand how it developed into the multi-million-dollar industry that it is today. We will begin by looking at where humans first found it and where it came from before delving deeper into its history.
Cannabis grows in the wild in a variety of regions across the world. It is challenging to trace marijuana back to a specific location, time, or use. Still, scientists are hard at work trying to determine the exact origins of this beautiful plant. As a result of recent scientific investigation of fossil pollen, scientists suspect that marijuana originally comes from the Tibetan Plateau. The fossils that led scientists to draw this conclusion demonstrate that the marijuana plant's origins date back to this location in northwestern China, somewhere around 19.6 million years ago. They then began to determine that this plant traveled to Europe 6 million years ago and then to China's eastern side 1.2 million years ago. Scientists have also found it growing in the northern regions of Pakistan. There, people have seen it reach heights comparable to the first story of a high-rise building! These wild cannabis plants do not contain very high levels of the chemical responsible for the psychoactive effects of consuming cannabis, so it was not used as a recreational drug until much later.
At the beginning of its use by humans, marijuana (cannabis) was used as an herbal medicine instead of a recreational drug and getting high. These first uses of marijuana date back to somewhere around 500 BC. These first uses are said to have been somewhere in the central region of the continent of Asia. Back in that time, the marijuana plant was harvested in the wild and grown to be used by humans to treat pain relief, herbal medicine, and other herbal medicine uses.
