When I started training with Mike and Jordan, I was thirty-eight years old and had been struggling to win the fitness game for fifteen years. Im a strong believer in the power of DNA and innate skills, and Im grateful to have a ton of natural ability. Im amazing at business. I can rally an audience around any idea that I believe in. Fitness, on the other hand, just doesnt come naturally to me. Its not about the effortIm obsessed with hard work. I grew my familys retail wine business from $3 million to $60 million within five years of taking over the company. I started a media empire with my brother, AJ, that now employs more than eight hundred people. I will never stop hustling, but I could not get my ass to the gym or control myself when I saw a tray of chicken wings before I met these guys.
Mike and Jordan were my trainers for a collective seven yearsMike the first two years, Jordan for three, then they alternatedand I was a fucking mess when we started. I knew nothing about nutrition. I was working and traveling 24/7 with zero time to think about food or exercise. And my biggest obstacle: I believed that I suck at this whole fitness thing.
So, I was amazed by how well their program worked for me. By the end of our time together I was able to deadlift 315 pounds after never picking up a barbell in my life. Ive maintained my goal weight. I can open a refrigerator, or a restaurant menu, and eat without guilteven when its something unhealthy. I can keep up with my kids without feeling like an old man. I can lift a heavy bag from an overhead compartment without worrying about what it will do to my back. I am proof that their approach works even on someone who never felt like a natural in the gym.
I understand my experience will be different from yours. Reading a book by two trainers is not the same as working with them every day for years. But I still believe there is a high likelihood that Eat It! will be the breakthrough youve been looking for because Mike and Jordans program is so powerful. It works because these guys set you up for the long game. Their expertise is backed by a genuine desire to help people, and that shines through in everything they do. The end resultthe book youre holdingis equal parts compassion and tough love, and I believe this fitness program will stick with you even if others did not. It did for me.
These guys also have an amazing ability to call bullshit on the misinformation around fitness that holds so many people back. They point out the crap, then they take the time to teach you how nutrition actually works so you can make smarter choices. Its overwhelming to think about the sheer level of education Mike and Jordan brought into my life. They didnt just tell me what to eat. They taught me how to eat in a way that makes my body and mind feel great. They didnt just give me an exercise routine. They helped me see why strength training makes sense for everyday lifeand Im a huge commonsense guy. Who the heck wants to work out their legs? But I do it because I understand how useful it is, especially when Im older, to have strong leg muscles. Strength training has a tremendous impact on my day-to-day life in a way I never would have imagined.
Mike and Jordan also opened my eyes to one of the biggest mistakes people make with their nutrition: that you cant outwork your mouth. Wed like to think we can eat like crap if we just hit the gym hard, but the math doesnt work out that way. We usually eat more calories than we realize, and we never burn as many calories working out as we think.
And one of the biggest reasons Mike and Jordans program works is because they dont demonize the misstep. If you eat a whole pizza or a bucket of ice cream after six days of sticking to your calorie goals, they never make you feel like youve fucked up. Even if you spend a month eating that way, you still didnt fuck up. And Mike and Jordan have seen me do a lot of things that could count as fucking up.
There was the day at the Mets game when I ate an entire catering tray of BBQ baked beans and was up five pounds the next morning.
There are the dozens of wings I eat during my fantasy baseball draft every year, bones and all.
There was the time I discovered that I could manipulate the scale by pressing my big toe against the wall when I step on it... and the two months I used that trick to eat like shit and send them accountability photos of my fake weight. By the time I cracked and told them about my toe scam, Id gained seven pounds. But they didnt consider it a setback. They suggested I stop lying to myself, and to them, but they didnt treat me like Id done something wrong. We just kept moving forwardbecause theyre always about the long game.
You are in incredible hands with Mike and Jordan. They are constantly learning, and you and I get to benefit from the curiosity and passion that they bring to their craft. They care deeply about helping people live their best lives. I think the ingredients of who they are, how they communicate, and the care and empathy they bring to fitnessan area of life that so many of us struggle withwill bring lasting change to your world.
Gary Vaynerchuk
Have you ever gone out to dinner, eaten enough chips and guac to feed a family of twelve, then worried because you thought you ruined your progress?
Have you ever been sick, injured, or traveling and had to skip a workout or even an entire week of workouts? And did you feel guilty or nervous that you messed everything up?
Listen. You cant screw this up.
Were gonna say it again. Keep reading.
You cannot screw this up.
We dont care if you blew past your calories by an extra 3,000. You didnt mess up. We dont care if you missed one workout or two workouts or a month of workouts. You didnt mess up. We dont care if you had an entire box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, six slices of pizza, four pints of Ben & Jerrys, and a basketful of chocolate turtles. Thats definitely an odd combination of food choices. But you didnt mess up.
Because heres the part most fitness gurus get wrong: the only way to mess up is to stop altogether. Give up. Quit. Say youre done.
See, most people use I messed up as an excuse to keep messing up. To stay off track. They let one bad meal turn into a day, then a week, then a month, then years. But thats nonsense. And as of this moment its not a valid excuse. Because you cant screw this up. Its impossible. As long as you get right back on track, youre going to keep making progress.
This fitness thing? Its supposed to be fun. Its supposed to make you confident, happy, and healthy. Its not a competition. There is no finish line at which you need to arrive to achieve your goals. There is no rush. Youre playing the long game here. Its for life, not seven or twenty-one or thirty days. This is forever. And when youre playing forever, you cant screw up.
Before we dive into calories, protein, cardio, strength training, supplements, insulin, your thyroid, or anything else fitness gurus love to Instagram about, we need to discuss the most important precursor to your success: your mindset.
The hardest part of losing weight, getting stronger, and becoming healthier isnt figuring out what to eat or finding the perfect workout plan or optimizing your macros. The hardest part is cultivating a mindset that allows you to believe in your ability to succeed and prevents you from quitting when you arent losing weight as quickly as you would like.
The truth is, your progress will be slower than you want. Andwe arent going to sugarcoat thisit will be a difficult process. But as long as you dont quit, you will succeed. Its not a question of if, only a matter of when.
