- The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey is one of the most spiritual locations in Europe. Most of the cathedral was built as a Greek Orthodox church in the 6th century CE by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (ruled 527-565). When the Ottoman Turks conquered the Byzantine Empire and renamed Constantinople Istanbul in 1453 it became and has continued to be a mosque.
