Introduction

For those of you who havent read my first book, Makeup: The Ultimate Guide(2008), my career as an international makeup artist began while I was working as a hairdresser at a beauty pageant in 1993. Id never done makeup before then because, to be honest, I never really thought Id be that good at it. I cant draw, and to this day I have to get illustrators to refine my face charts. So the idea of becoming a makeup artist was completely foreign to me.

The only way I can explain what happened that day is fate. It so happened that one of the guest judges at this beauty pageant was Naomi Campbell. At one point during her preparation, Naomi and her makeup artist had a tiff, and he stormed out. As she glared around the room, her eyes met mine and she said, Fix my lips.

Just as I was nervously applying gloss to Naomis lips, the paparazzi burst through the door. All I remember were blinding white flashes, but the next day photos of me applying Naomi Campbells lip gloss were plastered everywhere. And before I knew it, I was being booked as a makeup artist. Five minutes of Naomis life completely changed mine, so Id like to thank her for the dummy spit that began my career.

A big part of my job involves working backstage at fashion shows, where everything has to be done quickly.
