Why does a cat purr? Well, only the cat knows for certain and he aint telling. So what are we humans to do to figure out this mysterious collection of fur, mischief and wonder? Well, we can give it our best shot.

With research, observation and interaction with these fabulous felines, we can surmise reasons for their behavior strange, curious and wonderful.

Can we read a cats mind? Nope. But with our knowledge of cats, we can reasonably decipher the why of the feline. And in these pages, you will discover the why questions and answers to the best of one authors and cat lovers ability. So read ahead and explore the solutions to the age-old question: Why in the world did that cat do that?

Keep pussyfooting,

Why do cats rub against legs, tables, beds, and just about anything else?
Picture 9

T o announce ownership . When a cat rubs us or anything else, he is leaving his scent behind to tell other cats that he owns this person, furniture or any other thing. Cats have scent glands around their mouths, foreheads, chins, ears, and between their toes. And they love rubbing their scent onto the things around them. So when your cat rubs you, you become his territory.

But are there other reasons your cat rubs his human?

Yes, he is being affectionate and enjoying the physical contact. He even likes the combined scent of yours and his something we cannot smell. But we can enjoy his love.

Why do cats scratch the furniture, scratching posts and other things around the home?
Picture 13

F or cats, scratching is perfectly natural, but they do not sharpen their claws by scratching. Instead, cats do this to unsheathe a fresh, sharp claw beneath the old dull one.

Another reason for the scratching is territory marking. By scratching, felines leave a scratch mark and their scent from glands between their toes to signal other kitties as to whose territory it is. Outside, felines scratch trees, fences and other places to leave their mark.

A third reason is to exercise their claw muscles. Cats need to keep their hunting muscles in great shape so scratching helps. Their claws also need to be in shape for climbing, fighting and defending themselves.

Why do cats enjoy a massage?
Picture 17

F or the same reasons we do. Its a relaxing, good tension relieving feeling. A massage allows blood flow to the muscles loosening them up giving warm sensation. Massages relieve tension, reduce stress and increase blood flow, giving that warm and fuzzy feeling. So massage your kitty just not too much. Let her decide when you are done.
