Leapfrogging, R.A. Mashelkar and Ravi Pandit tell us, is not enough. We must pole-vault. Leapfrogging means jumping to safety, while pole-vaulting means exceeding the bar through daring innovation. Todays global society must pole-vault to sustainable development, that is, to a world that is prosperous, socially inclusive and environmentally sustainable. This wonderful book, by two of Indias most illustrious and knowledgeable engineers and innovators, is an invaluable primer on how we can pole-vault to the future we want by building bold, breakthrough technologies that rapidly reach unprecedented scale.
As the books exciting narrative and vivid examples makes clear, India is already on this path, with breakthrough innovations carrying Indias 1.4 billion people into a new age of shared prosperity and environmental sustainability. There are, of course, huge challenges, risks and tasks ahead. This book will provide invaluable inspiration and guidance for success, especially for the new generation of innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders who will soon lead the way.

LEAPFROGGING TO POLE-VAULTING THE BEGINNING OF A CONVERSATION
T his book emanates from lessons from the books of our own lives.
Our individual experiences, beliefs and common passion to make technology work for the betterment of society have been the driver of this book.
We both come from different backgrounds. One of us, Raghunath Mashelkar, was born in a poor family, walked barefoot to school, studied under street lights and completed all levels of education in India, including his PhD, thanks entirely to scholarships.
He was strongly influenced by a huge scarcity of resources in both his personal life as well as in his studies and research. But the combination of extreme scarcity and great aspiration led him to create the 10x principle that reverberates throughout the book. Extreme scarcity implies doing things ten times cheaper, and great aspiration means doing them ten times better.
On the other hand, Ravi Pandit had the benefit of studying at one of worlds best institutesthe Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)which taught him that every problem can be solved through cutting-edge science and technology for the betterment of the world. He believes that it is incumbent upon each one of us to play ones part in improving our universe. The limitless power of technology to do good and the conviction that the golden age is ahead of usand not behind usis also the result of this influence. MIT also lays a strong emphasis on
