INTRODUCTION
A fake book, or lead sheet, is one of the most useful tools for musicians, amateur andprofessional alike. A fake book has just a single line of music, similar to the right hand in standardpiano music. To make it even simpler, there is only one note at a time, representing the melody of asong. If you ever struggled with playing two hands together, reading the two staves simultaneously, you can rest assured that your task here will be easy by comparison.
You will also notice symbols consisting of letters and numbers above the musical notes, such asCm, B7, etc. These symbols provide flexible guidelines for creating chords, leaving you the freedomto play in whatever style, at whatever level of difficulty you like.
Despite its simplicity, a fake book allows for unlimited complexity and musical creativity. Dontlet the name fool you. A fake book is so called because the performer improvises or "fakes" thechords and accompaniment. Yet, despite the name, this is a "real" musical experience, mastered byMozart, Beethoven and countless others in fact, some of their greatest compositions wereimprovised or "faked" and then written down.
Why the FIRST Fake Book?
Although the layout is simple, using a fake book to its maximum advantage takes a high degreeof skill. Many of the fake books commercially available are designed for experienced musicians. Thebeginner may find that even with the simplified format, there are other complications. There maybe such challenges as playing in various keys (lots of black notes), various time signatures, anddifficult rhythms.
How Your First Fake Book Makes Playing Easier
We have taken special care to make this book as easy to use as possible. Melodies have beensimplified, the number of chords needed has been reduced to a minimum, and rhythms have beenreduced to what anyone with a few months of study will know. The print is large, and the songs arelaid out to emphasize their simplicity. Where the melody repeats with different words, that is madeobvious as well.
The Key of C: Keeping Black Notes to a Minimum
If you have had any classical music study, you may be aware that when a collection of sharps orflats appears at the left of every line, that tells you that the piece is in a certain key. Practically, thatmeans that every time you encounter those notes, they are automatically played as sharps or flats. In this book, you will not have to be concerned with any of that, as all the songs are arranged in thekey of C.
A Few Chords to Play Many Songs
Unlike professionally oriented fake books, where you will find many different chords, and someof those quite difficult, most of the songs in this book can be played with a dozen or so chords. Infact, many of the songs can be played with only three or four chords. All the chords chosen for thisvolume are easy to play and fit naturally under the hand.
Finally, the songs have been chosen to represent a variety of styles, including many of the bestlovedand most requested standards. I hope this collection helps start you on the path of creativityand comfortable music making. Using melody and chords is one of the best ways to understand thestructure of all music and will lead you nicely to further study in classical, jazz, rock and any othertype of music you like. Enjoy the journey!
