Being healthy, beautiful, and radiant is as much an inside-out process as it is an outside-in one. It is a balance between what you put inside your body, what touches your body on the outside, and your overall quality of lifeachieving optimal health is a holistic process. Among many other things, your health will determine how you age and how you look as you age, which is why I love the inherent and learned wisdom of Dr. Trevor Cates in the pages that follow. Her approach goes far beyond how to get glowing skin; it helps the reader understand how this glow comes from an overall sense of balance, and provides them with the tools and knowledge to achieve this. It helps them understand their own bodies, enabling them to look and feel their best.
An incredible piece of the puzzle is certainly our nutrition plan. As a physician for over twenty-five years, I have found that women of all ages, and especially around menopause, do better when we change up our eating habits throughout the year. We do have seasons for a reason. In Natural Beauty Reset, Dr. Cates includes nutrition plans for fall, winter, spring, and summer. I appreciate this strategy. It reminds us, every season, to adjust to our environment, and incorporate seasonal healing foods and recipes to support our immune system, hormonal balance, mood, memory, and skin. Tuning our bodies to the shifting seasons in this way helps us reconnect not only with our environment, but with our own bodies. It gives us a sense of well-being and natural radiance that you just cant achieve with skincare alone.

In Natural Beauty Reset, with its comprehensive deep dive into the root causes of our physical strugglesfrom external stress to internal hormonal imbalancesDr. Cates acknowledges that we cannot just look beautiful and radiant; we need to feel it.
In my professional experience, I know this to be true: while interventional therapies like stem cells, peptides, and laser treatments have helped make progress in patients feeling more beautiful and healthy, these external solutions account for less than 10% of what it means to actually be healthy. True vitality comes from multiple sources: nourishing our body with the right foods at the right times and the correct proportions, incorporating regular physical activity into our lives, maintaining good relationships, and a careful consideration of what we are putting on our body are all crucial components of our health.
What we apply on our skin is absorbed into our skin and gets into our system; it is all connected. By the time a woman leaves the house in the morning, its estimated she has put over 180 chemicals on her body. Many of these chemicals are hormone disrupting. In fact, we are exposed to a multitude of toxic chemicals before we are even born. A study performed in 2004 looked at toxic chemicals found in newborn babies umbilical cord blood. Two hundred eighty-seven external chemicals were identified in the blood, 208 of which were known to cause birth defects and abnormal development in animal studies, 217 of which were found to be toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 180 of which were known to cause cancer in humans and animals. Pesticides, herbicides, toxic compounds, waste from burning garbage and gasoline, and so many other toxins that we inhale or seep into our skin daily affect our health and can be at the core of many of the hormone imbalances we struggle with. Toxic exposures and hormone disruptors are a significant and underappreciated cause of health problems, especially considering the hundreds of thousands of chemicals in circulation.
