A Perfect Day in Cairo

7.00am

Early start

Fill up with a good breakfast, such as the buffet at the Ramses Hilton (1115 Korneash An Nil) before grabbing a taxi to the Giza Pyramids. Fix a deal for hiring the same taxi and driver all day.

8.00am

World wonder

Be in line to get one of the few daily tickets allowing access inside the Great Pyramid. Marvel at the outside of the pyramids, and visit the Sphinx and the amazingly preserved Solar Boat.

11.30am

Lunch

Get your taxi back to the city centre for lunch at the famous Felfela restaurant on Shari Hoda Shaarawi, which has been serving delicious Egyptian cuisine for decades. Arrive early to avoid the lunchtime crowds.

1.00pm

Egyptian Museum

Ten minutes walk from Felfela restaurant is the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square (Meadan At Tahrir). Select only the best and go straight to the remarkable Tutankhamun treasures upstairs.

2.30pm

Citadel

Jump back in the taxi and head towards Islamic Cairo for a completely different feel of the city, followed by a stroll through the nearby Muhammad Ali Mosque. The views from the terrace of the Citadel are stunning.

4.00pm

Bazaar

Drop down into the Khan Al Khalili bazaar for some retail therapy. Break the shopping with coffee and cake at the traditional Fishawi cafe, on an alley to the west of Sayyedna Al Hussain Mosque, perhaps accompanied by a smoke on one of the local sheesha water pipes.

5.30pm

Sunset sail

Make for the banks of the Nile and bid farewell to your taxi as you swap it for a felucca sail boat on the river at sunset. The noise of the city melts away as you snack and drink, whilst lazily drifting between the islands.
