Chapter 1: Learning as a way of life

The pursuit for knowledge is never-ending this has been proven by history itself. For instance, scientists and medical researchers have introduced to the world a medical breakthrough that brings hope in curing even the fatal illnesses that have threatened mankind the stem cell therapy. Since its introduction, stem cell therapy has been the center of controversies, and is widely debated by scholars. There is a great divide existing between people who are in favor of the therapy and people who strongly object to its use and research. But amidst this diversity in beliefs, research about the said therapy is ongoing. Scientists are conducting tests, and comprehensive studies to acquire more knowledge about the stem cell therapy. And this is done to pursue knowledge that they have not yet known before.

Now, let us leave behind these medical discussions, that scientific world, and dwell in our own personal world, in our own comforts. People all over the world people from different races, with various beliefs are in their own quests for knowledge. Students are searching in the libraries for some books and academic journals that might provide the answers for their queries about, for example, the history of their country. A rising businessman attends seminars that discuss effective ways on how to become successful in the competitive world of business, in the hopes that he will someday succeed in the field he has chosen. A chorister listens to different choral groups to help her increase her level of musicality. Even that innocent five-year-old child asks his mom why a ball rolls on the floor.

See? One thing similar among all these people is their curiosity curiosity that leads to their desire to search for knowledge, to search for answers to all of lifes questions, to learn new things that they have never known before. This is because learning provides us a lot of possibilities to grow into better persons. And as we dwell on the fact that our development could be attributed to the knowledge that we acquired, and continue to acquire, we arrive to the conclusion that learning could actually be an inseparable part of life that learning itself is a way of life.

Considered as a way of life, why don't we begin to search for possible ways to improve our learning?

Chapter 2: What is learning capacity?

Imagine an airless balloon in front of you. We see nothing more than that tiny elastic itself. Now, visualize in your mind that the balloon is being inflated by air. The once airless balloon has expanded dramatically, and is a lot different from what it was before. Perhaps what is greatly noticeable is that the more air occupies the balloons interiors, the higher the balloon floats afterwards. This is somehow similar to the human brain and its relation to the over-all performance and function of an individual. The more knowledge an individual acquires from learning, the more effective he becomes in the activities he engages in. Scientifically speaking, this phenomenon is referred to as learning capacity.

According to Knowledge Works, a handbook that instructs people on how to apply knowledge effectively in their lives, an individual has an innate capability to distinguish and utilize the knowledge he had acquired through the process of learning. It also attests that when ones learning capacity is increased, his way of learning also develops further. What is more interesting about it is that humans learning capacity is interminable, and this could be attributed to our brains neuroplasticity the brains own way of reorganizing itself. Structural plasticity, a type of neuroplasticity, is that phenomenon that occurs when the brain itself changes its structure as the learning process takes place; just like that balloon changing its physical appearance as it is being filled by the air. Thus, our brain never stops functioning as we continue to learn more things, but keeps on adapting instead as new information and knowledge are being stored into it.

But how can an individual increase his learning capacity?

Chapter 3: Learning styles to increase ones learning capacity

There are countless ways people do to acquire knowledge, thus increasing their learning capacity. Among them are reading, the widely used of all, and doing hands-on activities that require an individual to integrate his total being in the actual learning process, therefore experiencing it firsthand. Learning Rx has categorized the different ways of learning techniques into auditory, visual, and kinesthetic.

An individual is considered an auditory learner if he acquires knowledge effectively through aural activities. For example, a lot of junior high school students excel in their exams after listening to their teachers discussions. Some study methods include reciting your notes out loud (just like how some people memorize poems just by reading the verses out loud), and recording your professors discussion, or your own voice discussing what you have learned.

On the other hand, when an individual acquires knowledge best from what he has observed and perceived, then he is considered a visual learner. Subjectively speaking, this style of learning is more applicable to young children. Kindergartens, even some month-old babies, are usually provided some visual aids that show what colors are, the letters of the alphabet, and the basics that they could learn at a very young age. Some people claim that they could remember things better after they have seen or have even watched them.

In contrast to visual learning, here is the third learning style that some people find more effective kinesthetic learning. This style of learning involves hands-on experience. This means that an individual acquires knowledge effectively after he himself has participated in the actual learning process. For example, an aspiring chorister would not become a good one without singing every note that the song requires. Aside from previously mentioned example, jotting down notes while the professor discusses some theorems in mathematics or some technical terms that need to be memorized is also inclusive of kinesthetic learning.

Given the three main styles of learning, it must be remembered that each person has different ways of acquiring knowledge, and the method of learning differs in how fast an individual learns through a particular learning style. However, it must also be noted that no one is restricted from acquiring knowledge only through the learning styles mentioned before. NLP is now one of the techniques that help various people accelerate their learning capacity.

Chapter 4: History of NLP

In the 1970s, two men from entirely different origins cofounded NLP, or the Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique.

Richard Bandler, a man of mathematics and gestalt therapy, shared his knowledge and collaborated with John Grinder, a professor of linguistics. The two were said to have worked on a thesis project that aspired to come up with an archetype of the human behavior. The two conducted studies and researches in search for an answer to their query about why there are some people who actually excel in the fields they engaged in, while others strive harder and were put in more difficult situations before they could have attained whatever they aimed for. Emerging from two different fields of knowledge, it could be inferred that the two great minds wanted to come up with a new way of teaching that will surely encompass the entire being of an individual.
