Stoicism
Introduction
T he Stoics of ancient Greece recognized four essential virtues within their philosophy. They concentrated on what they referred to as prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. These four virtues were believed to be the goals of the philosophical ethics of the time. These four virtues defined what we all ought to work toward to be happy in life. Stoicism was no exceptionthey looked toward these four virtues to guide them.
These four virtues would guide everything you do in life if you lived the Stoic lifestyle. To be a Stoic, you must make these virtues the key to everything that you do. They ought to guide you through every aspect of your life to know what you are doing. They should drive you forward, to keep you actively striving to achieve that happinessEudaimonia in the Greek understanding of ethics.
A Closer Look at Stoicism
Before we begin, stop, and consider one point: Stoicism is not merely a way of thinking or a type of knowledge. Instead, philosophy, with Stoicism included, is a lifestyle. It is a way to liveit is exercising and practices a specific type of life because you believe it is the perfect one without any room for disagreement. Usually, philosophies of all kinds have their justifications for why they matter and why they should be regarded as the right one. For Stoicism, we have the virtues justifying and validating its existence.
Stoicism is believed to begin in Platos Sophist, which he asks for some indication for what is real in life, or what is existing at the moment. One of the considered answers is that being able to act or be acted upon is what marks us as being existent. Essentially, that is anything that can be acted upon or can act itself.
For the Stoics, this was acceptedhowever, they added to it. In the Stoic perspective, only bodies exist. Bodies can move or be moved upon, and therefore, they exist. They disregard the idea of materialists or spiritualists, instead choosing to specify that all that exists is the physical body itself. Even though that is explicitly limited to the physical body, they recognize that there is room for the spirit. However, that spirit is created as energy, so to speakit is the combination of the elementsfire, air, water, and earth. The active elements, in particular, fire and air, can create the pneumathe spirit. The pneuma is believed to sustain the body and growth. Pneuma is what keeps us rooted, keeps us what we are physically. Of course, this is just barely breaching the surface of Stoicism and the arguments behind it.
Marcus Aurelius is commonly referred to as the last of the Five Good Emperors during the time in which the Roman Empire was led through wisdom and virtueand we get a glimpse into his virtue through reading his Meditations. Stoicism became his way of life. The stony exterior, the stolid nonreactive traits, helped him to thrive as an emperor. It enabled him to deal with stress as it inundated him, and he was able to rule one of the most influential, powerful nations that the world has ever seen.
Stoicism, as we know it today, comes from some of the followers of this philosophy. In particular, Marcus Aurelius became one of the greatest proponents of this type of thinkinghe showed that he could possess the virtues.
To be a Stoic, you will learn that many different things will happen during your life, and you will have control over these situations. Stoics do not have a better experience than you do. They still go through struggles daily. Some of them will have a lot of hardships, and some of them will not. Just because you decide to be a Stoic does not mean that all the world's troubles and problems will disappear and never bother you again. It is just not realistic thinking, and no Stoic believes this to be true.
The difference though is that Stoics learn that it is not worth getting upset over things they cannot control. They see the troubles and issues that come into the world, and they know not to get upset about them.
Even the early Stoics faced hardships. For example, Zeno survived a shipwreck, and Epictetus was a slave who was mistreated by his master. It is not like the founders of this philosophy were all living the high life, being rich and getting everything handed to them. As most people do, they faced some hardships; they just learned how to change how they reacted to the situation rather than letting that specific situation control them.
No matter what you believe or how hard you work, there will sometimes be bad things in your life. Sometimes these will be good things, and you will be joyous and happy. In other cases, these are going to be bad things. You will be able to make difference in your viewpoint on life. You will be able to look at any situation you encounter, whether it is a good situation or a bad situation, and think about it logically. While other people will let their emotions get the best of them, allowing the emotions to dictate how they will behave, the Stoic will decide when and how they will react.
When bad things happen, you get to decide how you are going to react to that situation. If you are like most of the majority, you will get worked up and angry when you suppose someone has done you wrong. You will speak out against the other person, maybe do something in retaliation, something you will regret afterward. As a Stoic, you will find things are different. You will take a look at the situation, decide that it is not that important, and then go on with your life, often without any reaction.
When we learn how to make the best of any situation that heads our way, it doesn't mean that you will not take the time to deal with it. It is something that you can think about when life is going well to enjoy all of the good situations to the fullest. This philosophy is not just about dealing with when bad things come your way; it is also one that you can use when the good things come into your life and the things that you want to enjoy and celebrate all of the time.
We have spent a lot of time talking about how the Stoics respond when bad things come into their lives. However, there are many times when you will experience good things. Do not think that you have to ignore these good things just because you are a Stoic. You should celebrate these, taking them in a much as possible. But when you are more in control over your emotions and think through them in advance, you will be better prepared to realize when there are good times, and you will take them to their fullest rather than thinking about a bad thing that happened earlier on.
