Covid-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after 2020s COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

NEW ZEALAND HIGHLIGHTS

New Zealands best sights and experiences, and the road trips that will take you there.

Bay of Islands

History, culture and marine adventures combine on Trip 4: Northland & the Bay of Islands. Amble amid colonial history in genteel Russell, before cruising around the islands. At the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, discover modern New Zealand amid warm Mori welcomes and cultural performances. The Museum of Waitangi presents the story of the 1840 agreement underpinning this countrys past, present and future.

Akaroa & Banks Peninsula

French-flavoured Akaroa bends around a pretty harbour on Banks Peninsula, with Hectors dolphins, the worlds rarest, frolicking offshore. The Summit Rd snakes around the rim of an ancient volcano while winding detours lead to hidden bays. Take Trip 3: East Coast Express to discover surprises on land and sea.

Queenstown

Queenstown may be the birthplace of modern-day bungy jumping, but there are many options for memorable adventures here. Against a backdrop of jagged mountains and a snake-shaped lake, travellers on Trip 23: Central Otago Explorer can hike, bike, raft, or ride a ridiculously fun luge, then dine in cosmopolitan restaurants or have a night out in some of NZs best bars.

Rotorua

Infused with the aroma of sulphur, Rotoruas geothermal activity is central to its identity. Amid the steaming geysers and boiling mud pools of Whakarewarewa and Te Puia, traditional Mori culture is showcased proudly, and the nearby Redwoods forest is a verdant haven for walking and mountain biking. Trip 1: Thermal Discoverer will take you to other volcanic wonders nearby.

SH73 (Arthurs Pass) Stunning views crossing the Southern Alps.

SH8 (Inland Scenic Rte) Skirt the mountains and traverse the Mackenzie Country. Trips

SH94 (Te AnauMilford Hwy) A mountain-and-lake wonderland ending with a huge reveal.

The West Coast

Hemmed in by the Tasman Sea and the Southern Alps, this long, skinny region is wild all the way. Trip 16: The West Coast Road runs its length, from praras arches within Kahurangi National Park, to Jackson Bay on the edge of World Heritage wilderness. In between are wonders such as Punakaiki Rocks and the glaciers, Franz Josef and Fox.

Trips

Milford Sound

Fingers crossed youll drive Trip 22: Milford Sound Majesty during clear weather when its collage of verdant cliffs, pointy peaks and cobalt waters are at their best. More likely, though, is the classic Fiordland scenario of mist and rain, with Mitre Peak revealed slowly through the atmospheric haze. But no matter: more water means better waterfalls, so either way you win.
