WELCOME TO CAPE TOWN AND THE WINELANDS

Modern visitors would surely agree with Sir Francis Drakes description of the region as the fairest Cape in the whole circumference of the earth. Perched at the foot of Africa, Cape Towns golden beaches, wild forests and rugged peaks melt into rolling, vine-covered slopes. With Eyewitness Top 10 Cape Town and the Winelands, its yours to explore.

Cape Town is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts: you can hike the footpaths on Table Mountain, picnic on the lawns at Kirstenbosch, don a wetsuit and learn to surf or people-watch at a pavement caf over a glass of local wine. Within an hours drive there are hundreds of wine estates, where you can sample vintages in centuries-old manor houses or bold modern buildings decked out with local art.

Food and drink are just as important as natural beauty in the so-called Mother City, whether youre looking for Cape Malay bobotie and a syrupy koeksister in Bo-Kaap or fine dining and a flight of wines at a Stellenbosch estate. Festivals are also a way of life here, epitomized by the flamboyant Cape Town Carnival and the colourful Kaapse Klopse New Year parade.

Whether youre coming for a weekend or a week, our Top 10 guide brings together the best of everything that Cape Town and the Winelands have to offer, from the cafs, shops and museums of the V&A Waterfront to the windswept coves of the Cape of Good Hope. The guide has useful tips throughout, from seeking out whats free to avoiding the crowds, plus six easy-to-follow itineraries designed to tie together a clutch of sights in a short space of time. Add inspiring photography and detailed maps, and youve got the essential pocket-sized travel companion. Enjoy the book, and enjoy Cape Town and the Winelands.

COMPANYS GARDEN

This peaceful oasis at the heart of Cape Town, with stunning views of Table Mountain, is set amid the citys most important concentration of old buildings and museums. It was established by Jan van Riebeeck in 1652 to provide fresh produce to passing Dutch ships. By the 18th century, it had been transformed into a world-renowned botanical garden and exported bulbs and other produce to Europe.
