WELCOME TO MUMBAI

A city of infinite contrasts, Mumbai is richly historic, unceasingly modern and energetic while being steeped in tradition. Discover galleries nestled in grandiose Colonial-era buildings, opulant film star bungalows and ancient Buddhist caves along the citys periphery in this melting pot of cultures. With Eyewitness Top 10 Mumbai, it is yours to explore.

Wanderers and dreamers have been drawn by Mumbais vibrant entrepreneurial culture or the lure of Bollywood, and have left their footprints all over the city. Be it the fashionable Colaba district, teeming with chic boutiques, bookstores and roadside stalls selling everything from watches to culottes, or the Indo-Saracenic Gateway of India, the artistic flavour of Kala Ghoda, or the bylanes of Bandra that hide colourful walls and tree-lined residences Mumbai boasts a remarkably cosmopolitan, enthralling map of vibrant streets, sights, colours, and smells.

Steal a moment of calm at Marine Drive or Juhu Chowpatty Beach as the city buzzes with activity, lose yourself among the trinkets at Chor Bazaar, or sip cutting chai at a roadside stall. Enjoy two of the most stunning museum complexes in the country Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum, or take a tour of the Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagri. The upscale Lower Parel stands in contrast to the lush Sanjay Gandhi National Park, and the Elephanta Caves bring ancient times to life. Even the business hub, Ballard Estate, is a sight to feast your eyes upon.

Whether youre coming for a weekend or a week, our Top 10 guide brings together the best of everything that the city has to offer, from the hottest nightclubs to the best cuisine. The guide has useful tips throughout, from seeking out whats free to avoiding the crowds, plus seven easy-to-follow itineraries, designed to tie together a clutch of sights in a short space of time. Add inspiring photography and detailed maps, and youve got the essential pocket-sized travel companion. Enjoy the book, and enjoy Mumbai.

GATEWAY OF INDIA

The heart of Mumbais tourist district and its most famous landmark, the Gateway of India was commisioned for the visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911, but was not built until 1924. It was once the first sight to greet travellers to Indian shores in the heyday of the British Raj. Ironically, it also became the exit point for British troops after India gained independence in 1947. Today, it is Mumbais most popular gathering place, and is always teeming with locals, visitors, vendors and boatmen.
