COVID-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

CURRENCY MATTERS

At the time of writing, money matters in Cuba are in a state of flux. The convertible (CUC$) was eliminated in January 2021 leaving Cuban pesos (CUP$) as the countrys main currency. However, the US dollar also circulates in Cuba at a fixed rate of 1:24 against the peso (roughly the same as the erstwhile convertible). Early indications suggest that, moving forward, state-run enterprises will charge prices in Cuban pesos while private business people will prefer to be paid in US dollars. However, until the tourist industry fully reopens post-Covid, the details could be subject to change. We suggest that travelers arrive in Cuba with US dollars along with a non-US linked credit card and ATM card. Once in Cuba, US dollars can easily be changed for CUP$. ATMs also dispense CUP$.

Welcome to Cuba

Cuba and I go back a long way, from the economic chaos of the 1990s to the heady days of the Obama reopening. Yet no matter how many times I visit this plucky Caribbean nation with its bewildering bureaucracy and free-flowing music, I still return home with more questions than answers. One moment its hot and frustrating, the next its humbling and heart-warming. One day nothing adds up, the next day everything makes sense. From the cacophonous streets of Havana to the deserted beaches of the Isla de la Juventud, Cuba jolts you with its baffling uniqueness. Welcome to a country with no precedent.
