Barcelona
WELCOME TO THE CITY

Barcelona has long been a rebel. Here artists and architects break new ground, writers pen pointed literature and queer artists perform loudly and proudly. Perhaps most famously, though, Barcelona has been (and continues to be) the bastion in the fight for Catalan independence. Even today, almost a century after the Civil War, the city spurns the Spanish flag, seeing it as a symbol of anti-Catalan and fascist dictator Franco.

Yes, Barna (take note: Bara is the football club) is a complex city. Its a place of bubbling tension and fierce unity; a paradox of beauty and grime, tradition and modernity. And its these wonderful contradictions that make Barcelonans so incredibly proud of their beloved city. And why shouldnt they be? Just look around. LGBTQ+ bars sit next door to Gothic churches, cycle lanes wind around Modernista mansions, vintage markets pop up in the foyers of old train stations and ultra-modern art galleries stand in medieval palaces.

No wonder, then, that Barcelonans get annoyed by guiris (a scathing name for tourists) who think Barna is just sea, sand and sangria. And thats exactly why you need this book to show you what really makes Barcelona the fierce and fabled city that it is. Well show you the vermouth bars where locals have been mingling for decades, the nightclubs that are definitely worth staying up late for (we really do mean late) and the very best spots to tapear (go for tapas). Of course, we cant capture every locals version of Barcelona, but we can offer a taste of the citys infectious spirit.

So, whether youre a visitor looking to go beyond the stereotypes, or a local in need of fresh inspiration, this book is here to help. Dont be a guiri visit Barcelona the local way.

If you try to describe Barcelona, your words will change like a kaleidoscope: one second, the city is a cosmopolitan metropolis, the next moment, its steeped in traditions. Thats what I love most about it theres always a different side to unearth.

Barcelona
THROUGH THE YEAR

Hedonistic festivals in summer, age-old traditions in autumn and merry-making fun in winter: theres always something afoot in this transgressive city.

SPRING

TIME ON THE TERRACES

As the weather starts to warm up, crowds flood back to Barnas plentiful outdoor terraces to while away afternoons with friends.

SANT JORDI

On 23 April, the day of Catalonias patron saint (Sant Jordi, or St George), booksellers take over the city streets and locals exchange roses and books with their loved ones.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM

A free dose of culture tempts Barcelonans on International Museums Day in May, with institutions staying open late into the night.

SUMMER

FESTES MAJORS

Locals love a summertime street party. Every barri has its own but Festes de Grcia draws the biggest crowds of Barcelonans thanks to its incredible handmade street decorations.

SUMMER SWIMS

In summer, the days are hot and the nights are long. So, after a hard days work, friends and families make their way to the beach for a refreshing dip and sundowner or two.

FESTIVAL FUN

Barcelona stages more music festivals than any one persons wallet (or liver) could possibly cope with. Throngs of revellers dance the night away at the likes of Primavera Sound, Snar, Vida and Crulla to name but a few.

THE AUGUST ADU

Barna reaches melting point in August. Businesses work shorter hours, or shut altogether, and locals flee the sweltering city to travel or visit family in cooler climes.

AUTUMN

FALL FORAGING

As the nights draw in, friends spend their Saturdays hiking in the mountains, looking out for mushrooms, before heading home to cook up a feast.

LA MERC

Barcelonans cant get enough of Septembers La Merc, the citys annual festival. Its a week of castells (human towers), gegants (giant parading figures) and the traditional correfoc (fire run).

LA CASTANYADA

Nothing says autumn in Barna like the smell of chestnuts roasting over hot coals. On 31 October, locals eat panellets (marzipan cakes coated in nuts) washed down with sweet wine. This tradition dates back centuries, when bell-ringers would eat chestnuts while pealing for the dead.

WINTER

COSY CAF VISITS

As things cool off, Barcelonans gravitate toward the citys xocolateries for warming mugs of thick, gloopy hot chocolate.

CHRISTMAS IN THE CITY

December is a blur of work lunches and nights out with pals before the main event: Christmas Day. Catalans get together with family to beat their Ti de Nadal (a smiling log) with sticks until it secretes presents. We kid you not.

HAVE A GRAPE YEAR

Come midnight, locals welcome the new year by stuffing a grape into their mouth with each strike of the clock.

CARNAVAL

Lent is a sober affair in Catalunya so locals make the most of Carnaval the last hurrah before 40 days of fasting. The week-long party includes fancy dress competitions and parades galore, while hosts an adults-only version.

KNOW-HOW

EAT
Except for breakfast, which is munched on the hoof, eating is a social affair and never rushed in Barcelona. Lunch is the main meal of the day and eaten from 2pm, followed by a siesta. Dinners are lighter and kick off any time after 8pm. At the weekend, an aperitif is a must, as is the beloved post-dinner sobretaula the tradition of chatting around the table, coffees and digestifs in hand.
