OR, BEAT TO QUARTERS

Published in Britain in 1937 by Michael Joseph Ltd, this novel was entitled Beat to Quarters in Little, Brown & Cos American edition. Happy Return is chronologically the fifth book in the Hornblower series, but the first to be written. The Hornblower series evolved from Foresters lifelong interest in naval history, in particular, naval battles from the early decades of the nineteenth century. Notable historical figures from the time, such as Wellington and Nelson, provided some of Hornblowers finer characteristics. Appropriately, the character was first developed during a long sea voyage taken by Forester in 1937, during an unsettled period in the authors life, when he was already largely living in California and working for the film industry; he had decided to take a long sea voyage to Central America to think through his career. Hornblowers name was inspired by a film producer Forester worked with briefly Arthur Hornblow. The fictional sea captains first name, Horatio, was derived from the character in Hamlet, not, as might reasonably be assumed, from Admiral Nelsons first name. It has been suggested that Hornblower is a partly autobiographical character and certainly in his tall, thin physique, he closely resembles his creator.
