Preface
Dear Reader (and every reader or potential reader is dear to a poet), before you proceed further may I say a word? The first poems you will encounter, if you do proceed, were published forty years ago and most of them written some years earlier. If they seem excessively quiet, know that they were written by a serious young man whose most constant pleasure was a silent dialogue he carried on with himself, a prolonged solitary brooding.
As he grew older, book by book, he grew bolder and livelier, as you can see for yourself. Indeed, as he grew older his poems grew younger until, toward the end of this collection, some poems are positively frisky.
It may amuse you to follow his constant coming out of himself, like a mantis in its successive moultings. Only in its final moult does the mantis achieve its wings, and here our analogy breaks down, for this poet, like all poets, does a little flying all along the way.
If you choose to follow him all the way, you can speed up the journey by reading one poem every ten pages or so. Or perhaps, better still, you might open the book at random, as during the Middle Ages Virgil used to be opened at random, and you may, just possibly, happen upon an oracle.
