Preface
It's a betting certainty that most people who pick up this book will know of, or are even fans of, Michael Mann's splendid 1992 movie The Last of the Mohicans. It was one of the big hits of that year, and was seen by millions of people all over the worldan unexpected success, proving that good old-fashioned adventure with a bit extra could still do well at the box office.
But for some readers the Mohicans story will have different associations. For some, it will conjure memories of a TV series, perhaps; or an earlier film version; or maybe one of those comic books that your parents managed not to disapprove of. In fact, Mohicans seems to have passed into the wider realms of culture, as this newspaper cutting nicely captured.

For a very few, it may still connote the original novelor an abridged, adapted, or rewritten retelling thereof.
The present book is about retellings. It has an accidental origin. One of us was teaching a course on the mass media, using comic books as its focus. A long search for materials that could illustrate the ways different renderings of a story could affect its meaning started revealing a number of versions of Mohicans. Then Michael Mann's film came out, and that made reference to an earlier, 1936 film version. A quick browse through film histories confirmed this and yet more film versions. Talking together, we realized we were sitting on a gold mine of fascinating materials, though we didn't yet know what exactly might be learned from studying them. What it has become is an ambitious project to try to discover why a story survives, and what it embodies of social ideas and ideals that subsequent generations are able to make use of.
