About The Author

Elaine Feuer has worked in the medical division of Little, Brown & Company, and freelanced as a research and development coordinator for a variety of film and television projects. While researching clinical studies for an AIDS documentary, she learned about the FDAs suppression of treatments for AIDS and other serious illnesses. Outraged by the FDAs abuse of its powers, Elaine utilized the skills obtained in achieving history and criminology degrees from the University of Toronto to research and write Innocent Casualties . FDA UPDATES - 2012 CONTENTS INTRODUCTION I became acquainted with Richard Stokley, the President of True Health, Inc., during the summer of 1991, when he was in Los Angeles to discuss True Healths participation in an AIDS documentary. True Health had tested their nutritional supplement in an astonishingly successful 180-day AIDS trial back in 1989. I was researching and developing projects for television, and we met at a production meeting.Despite the success of True Healths AIDS trial - no other AIDS study involving pharmaceutical or nutritional supplements had produced such positive results - the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) issued a court order preventing True Health from selling its product as a treatment to AIDS patients. As I drove Richard and his lawyer back to their hotel, Richard recounted True Healths experience with the federal government. I remember asking him, Are you saying there is an effective nutritional treatment for AIDS and the government is stopping it? I was appalled.True Healths AIDS test had been published in the Journal of Advancement in Medicines Winter 1990 issue. I sent the article to a television reporter, and he forwarded it to the publisher of an AIDS newsletter in Washington. The publisher, who was plugged into the federal governments AIDS network by serving on the board of several AIDS advisory groups, assumed True Health was a scam - he had seen all kinds of fraudulent AIDS treatments and cures. My reporter-friend agreed with the publisher - I was wasting my time with True Health. A vice president at Universal Studios concurred: If the nutritional supplement really worked, it would be easy to get exposure for True Health; all Richard would have to do is latch on to an AIDS celebrity like Elizabeth Taylor, or arrange for an interview with 60 Minutes . He could not have been more wrong. Although the AIDS documentary never materialized, Richard and I kept up a correspondence between Dallas and Los Angeles. Documented evidence detailing the FDAs and FTCs harassment of True Health convinced me that True Healths story had to be told .When I began investigating True Health, I knew as much about nutrition as the average person. I thought that unless you had a specific food allergy, a multi-vitamin and/or three balanced meals a day provided adequate nourishment - I had no idea that vitamins and nutrients could modify or even alleviate chronic illness. In fact, when my aunt, Carol Frank, called to tell me she had relieved a painful arthritic condition through diet alone, I was skeptical. I believed she believed she was better, but it was hard for me to fathom that a simple change in diet could cure a chronic disease such as arthritis.As my knowledge of vitamins increased, so did my knowledge about the FDAs war against nutritional and alternative therapies. The FDA has conducted illegal raids on health food stores, vitamin manufacturers, and alternative health care practitioners: In 1992, FDA agents burst into a doctors office - guns drawn - to seize Vitamin B . Yet these raids are rarely reported on network news broadcasts or in influential newspapers: The mainstream media is an instrument of the medical establishment.I learned that bias against alternative therapies goes far deeper than the FDA. The entire orthodox medical establishment - which includes the American Medical Association (AMA), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the various medical foundations, and the pharmaceutical companies - is threatened by alternative medicine. The conflict between mainstream and alternative medicine has little to do with science and everything to do with economics: If most diseases could be successfully managed with dietary supplements (a projection based on thousands of clinical studies), nutrients would replace the majority of pharmaceutical drugs.I was given access to True Health files, documents, videotapes, and audiotapes. Pam Chaplin, Lennie Myers, Bill Sanders (pseudonym), Randy Koppang, and Harvey Brennan (pseudonym) were interviewed for the purposes of this book. Statements from Dr. Boyer, Dr. Pyfer, and Dr. Tam - True Healths medical advisors; Dr. Pulse, the physician who conducted True Healths AIDS test; and AIDS test patients were transcribed directly from True Health videotapes.My appreciation and thanks to Richard, Ann, Mike and Richard Stokley, Jr. for their generous contributions of time and information. Allan Feuer, James Karnbach, Randy Koppang, and Kirk OHara offered their support and encouragement throughout the duration of this project. I would especially like to thank Carol Frank, who drove with me to Texas, Sharon Fox, and Anna Grinjesch.
