Libraries have long been viewed as safe refuge from the stresses of work, school, even home. But as times have changed, so have the realities of library security. Today, libraries of all types and sizes have fallen victim to the threat of serious crime. Because the risk to both staff and patron alike are very real, no librarian can afford to be unaware of library security and safety. Written by Bruce A. Shuman, Adjunct Professor of Library and Information Science at the University of South Florida and the author of a number of books on patron behaviour, the Library Security and Safety Handbook is a practical guide to recognizing security risks and preventing problems posed by patrons and staff. Not only does this book offer advice on developing security policies and procedures for staff confronted with a security threat, it describes the major risk factors to libraries, provides assessment tools to identify risks, prescribes preventive measures and recovery methods, and discusses the legal and ethical issues involved in library security. It also discusses ways of recognizing the motives and unique problems some patrons may pose and advises on how to be vigilant without being paranoid.

Preface
I am a child of the moviesalways have been and probably always will be. I grew up sittingon at least a weekly basisin large, darkened auditoriums, surrounded by dozens of other people, munching popcorn and occasionally commenting aloud on the action on the big screen. Given that biographical fact, I hope I may be forgiven for injecting one of my favorite movie scenes here to make a point about security.
The overarching topic of this book is security, and Clint Eastwood, to my mind, portrayed security in its best and purest form in his celebrated movie, Dirty Harry (1971). While the sequel may have contained the more memorable line, "Go ahead... make my day!" the bit of dialog that really got to me was in the original. What follows may not be the exact wording of that scene, but it's close enough.
In the film, Eastwood's title character, Harry Callahan, is a San Francisco police detective who has, without knowing it, blundered into an early-morning hold-up in progress at the coffee shop where he stops every day for his cup of carry-out coffee. His friend, the waitress, seems uncharacteristically nervous and distracted this morning. Harry, still sleepy, shrugs it off as he orders his coffee, pays for it, and departs. She's unable to tell him what's really going down. Two bad guys (whose guns were concealed while Harry was in the shop) now feel free to finish their robbery and promptly proceed to do so.
But the plucky waitress has cleverly figured out a way to alert Harry to the problem without speaking a word of warning. Intentionally, she has over-sugared Harry's cup of java tremendously, figuring that upon tasting it, he'd gag on the unaccustomed
