Instead of becoming a famous fashion designer as shed dreamed, Brett Bishop ends up working for the twenty-four-year-old daughter of an A-list designer instead. Even though her career plans didnt turn out as she expected, she still believes her expectations for her love life will be met. Brett is ready to meet Ms. Right Forever if she can get a break in the schedule her young boss dictates.

Evangeline Scott, known as Scotty, also dreamed of being a famous fashion designer. Years of fighting tooth and nail for a toehold in the fashion industry have taken their toll. Scotty has lowered her expectations and is the latest designer for I Am Alex, a clothing line for young adults. Her boss Alex and her congenial attitude is like a breath of fresh air, but Alexs chief designer, Brett, is something akin to morning breath with a dash of garlic, yet oddly interesting.

Scotty and Brett are more alike than they realize when they first meet, but it takes a crash landing in the wilderness for them to truly realize just how perfect they are for each other. They just have to survive Alex and her sister Cass who cant stand each other, their Uncle Mark who cant stand up to his own dog, and whatever lurks in the Montana mountains.

Brett Bishop tore her gaze from her computer and smiled indulgently at her twenty-four-year-old boss. Did you eat a vegetable over the weekend?

No, those are for smoothies, Alex Savas replied with a look of disgust and then grinned before she danced around Bretts office. I hired another designer two weeks ago. Surprise! It was killing me to keep her a secret. Are you happy? Alex didnt wait for an answer. Her style is going to fit perfectly between your androgynous, sharp lines and Angels colorful whimsy.

Brett watched Alex bounce around like a toddler whod just eaten a case of chocolate bars and chased it with a pot of coffee. Alexs layered pink skirt looked like a tutu, and contrasted sharply with her white button-down, short sleeve shirt. Brett loathed the way Alex had been wearing her long dark hair over the past month, in a ponytail on the right side of her head. Does Daddy know about this? Brett asked, hoping the flailing and dancing would stop.

Yes. I talked to him this past weekend and he agreed with my decision. Hes proud of how Im doing and said it was a good idea to diversify since my chain is growing so fast. Alex stopped dancing and smoothed her skirt. Ive just opened my ninth store and my online sales are crazy, she yelled with a grin and both fists clenched. Then she turned serious and waved a hand at Brett. But dont worry, I could never replace you. Even when youre in your forties and really old, youll still have that eye for the designs I love.

Good, because Im practically a fossil, Brett said acerbically. Whats with all of the bouncing and flouncing, weird clothes and hair lately?

Christian likes me this way.

Any guy who wants you to change who you are to suit him is a shithead. When do I meet him? Brett asked.

That would be never.

Brett sighed. I didnt know you were looking for a new designer.

I didnt either. Alex began to dance around again. I heard her tell someone in my yoga class that she designed for Longboard, so I did some digging and her style is like the ocean went to a rave. The next time I saw her I told her she needed to be a part of I Am Alex. Dont look at me like that, I did get her rsum before I made an actual offer.

Whats her name?

Evangeline Scott, but she prefers Scotty. Alex stopped dancing again and pointed at Brett. Thats how I knew she was meant for me. My creative people all have unisex names. Shell be here in an hour. I cant wait for you to meet her. Im going to take a power nap. My new personality is exhausting. She began to skip out of Bretts office and halfway to the door she slowed to a walk and groaned.

Brett sat back in her chair and released a sigh. Alexs father, Daniel Savas, was on the A-list of fashion designers. Unfortunately, Alex hadnt inherited his creativity, but since she was a small child she longed to be a part of the fashion industry. When Alex approached her father with a business plan for a clothing store, Daniel obliged and financed her dream. He based her headquarters as far away from the hubs of the fashion industry as he could. New Orleans was known for food, jazz, parties, but not fashion. Brett found it very odd that Alex would stumble upon a designer at a yoga studio a block away from the office .

She picked up her phone and sent a text to her most reliable source of information: I need to know everything you can find out about Evangeline Scott, aka Scotty. She worked for Longboard as a designer. Backtrack from there, please.

Scotty was a bit surprised by the headquarters of I Am Alex as she took a seat in the reception area. She was well aware of who Alexs father was and knew he had a hand in the success of the company. Scotty expected to see glitz, glamour and some of the flamboyant style Daniel was known for. Though the headquarters took up one floor in a New Orleans high-rise, it couldve easily been mistaken for a law or accounting firm judging by the austere lobby. Except for a few somewhat tasteful wingback chairs and conservative reception desk, the room was empty and the walls were bare.

A door opened and Alex exclaimed, Youre here. Im so happy.

Me too, Scotty said, trying to mimic Alexs exuberance as she stood. Her smile faded as Alex led her into a hallway lined on one side by offices that looked like glass cubes and on the other side by desks where a handful of people sat.

I have my design team in the conference room waiting to meet you, Alex said with a big smile. Dont be afraid of Brett. She likes to intimidate people with her height and her mean stare. Youll love Angel. Shes like us, friendly.

From Alexs description, Scotty knew who Brett was the second she stepped into the room. She smiled as Alex said, Scotty, this is Brett Bishop.

Nice to meet you, Brett said dully as she stood.

Scotty was nearly six feet tall, but she had to look up slightly to meet Bretts gaze. Great to meet you, she replied, and felt as though Bretts blue eyes were scanning every inch of her soul when they shook hands. To show she wasnt intimidated by the scrutiny, Scotty cocked her head slightly and looked over Bretts black button-down shirt, slate gray tie, faded jeans, and black biker boots.

Angel grabbed Scotty and hugged her tightly. Im Angel Pritchard. Im so happy to meet you, she gushed, adorned in a pale pink, form-fitting dress. When she released Scotty, she waved both hands as though fanning something hot. I can feel it! Im gonna love you.
