Vadodara Mohammed Rafi-His Voice, My Choice For Billions of Mohammed Rafi fans all over the world, the July is a st very auspicious month, since Rafi Punya Tithi falls on 31 July. As it is, there is not a single day when Rafi fans do not remember or cherish his memory by hearing his songs. However, 31st july marks a special occasion for all these fans to express their reverence to this great singer and above all a great human being. I decided to write something on my favourite singer to give my humble tribute to him.

I talked to Shri Parvez Ahmed, Son-in-Law of Rafi Saheb. He was very happy and with his consent and blessings, I started working on my project. As it is, there have been no. of books and literature written about Rafi Saheb and there is nothing that can be added without the risk of repetition .Hence I thought of a different approach by way of compiling data of Rafi Saheb's work and association with various actors, music directors, lyricists ,his co singers and few theme based songs. You may not find few songs of your choice in this book, because I have taken all the songs which are close to my heart and tried to include his best work. I am highly greatful to shri Parvez Ahmed for his valuable suggestions and inspiration from time to time.

I am also thankful to shri Ashok Dave, Ahmedabad, for providing valuable information and database of songs, awards, etc. from his book, Mohammed Rafi I am also thankful to Dr.D.M.Oza,Dr. Harishbhai Mehta,Shri Mihirbhai Bhatt and Shri Kulinbhai Desai, without their motivation and continuous follow up, this book would not have been written. Last but not least, I would like to thank my wife, Neela, daughter, Keta ,Son -in-law, Dhaval Dave and son,Bhavin for their encouragement during the writing of this book. I know, your heart and ears are always for the great Rafi Saab, I offer my love and best wishes to you in the form of this book. Jay Rafi SaabHaresh Joshi 31/07/2019 Mohammed Rafi-his Voice, My Choice Mohammed Rafithst( Born : 24 December 1924, Died : 31 July 1980 ) Mohammed Rafi was born in Kotla Sultan singh Village in Amritsar dist. of Punjab State. of Punjab State.

He was fond of singing since childhood. His childhood was spent in his village and since then he was very fond of singing and used to sing and imitate different singers even while working. A fakir used to come to the village and sing sufi song and Rafi would follow the fakir and sing the same sufi song in his style. Once he followed the fakir even out of the village and near the jungle in the late evening and fakir was surprised that the child was not scared of following him. He took the boy in his arms and embraced him, blessed him with his kind and divine words that HE WOULD ONE DAY BECOME A GREAT SINGER AND GREAT HUMAN BEING, THAT THE WORLD WOULD REMEMBER HIM FOR AGES. The world attributes these divine blessings from a fakir as the source of his success in his life. At an age of 14, Mohammed Rafi went to Lahore and took his training in music from Ustad Khan Abdul Wahid Khan, Jeevanlal Matto and Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

Once when he was humming a song while at work a gentleman connected with Lahore Radio Station Mr. Feroz Nizami heard the boy and invited him to sing for Radio Lahore, He sang his first song in a Punjabi film Gul Baloch, (soniye ni heeriye ni) in 1944, Music director was Shyam Sundar. This was the beginning of his glorious journey as a singer. From then on he never looked back and went on conquering heights of popularity throughout his lifetime. In 1944 he came to Mumbai. Under music director Naushad, he sang in chorus in the film Pehle Aap (Hindustan ke hum hai,Hindustan hamara)and started his Hindi films career.

In Hamara Sansar (Mus. Pt. Govindram ) he sang his first solo Song,(Aye dil nakam tamanna) In 1946 his two songs gave him immense popularity. They were Tera Khilona Toota baalak from Anmol Ghadi (Mus. Naushad) and Kahe kar bhi na aaye tum from Safar ( C. L. L.

Saigal in Shah Jahan a song Mere Sapanon ki rani Ruhi. After the Assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, he sang Suno suno ai duniyawalo Bapu ki ye amar kahani which was written by Rajendra Krishan and composed by music directors Husnalal Bhagatram. This song gave him Immense popularity. In 1947, his song from Jugnu ( Mus.Feroz Nizami ) Yahan Badla wafa ka bewafaai ke siva kya hai with Noor Jahan became very popular. He became a favourite singer of Naushad ,Husnalal Bhagatram, Shankar Jaikishan,Ravi,S. Burman, O. P. P.

Nayyar, Madan Mohan, Roshan and many others. He sang different type of songs and established his versatility. He could sing every type of song be it Bhajan, Qawwali, Gazal, Romantic, Sad , Patriotic with ease and his range and versatility would suit any and every actor on screen. He is the only singer who has sung maximum number of songs in hindi and regional languages. There have been many talenteted and great singers in the film music but one thing is for sure that his versatility and effortless style of singing in all three octaves was uncanny. He is truely as Naushad saab used to say Mausiqui ka Masiha.
