Life and Background
Tom Jones, a book of much vitality, hilarity, and charm, reflects both the comic vision of life and the intense social concern of its author. Henry Fielding was born on April 22, 1707, at Sharpham Park in Somersetshire to well-situated, upper-class parents. His mother was the granddaughter of Sir Henry Gold, Baron of the Exchequer, and his father, Edmund, fought against the forces of Louis XIV under the Duke of Marlborough, eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant-general. Fielding was educated first at home (much like Tom Jones) under the tutelage of a clergyman, then at Eton, and finally at the University of Leyden, which he attended from the spring of 1728 to the fall of 1729. Fielding, however, began his literary career even before he entered Leyden. And he began not as a novelist, but as a playwright: his first play, Love in Several Masques, was written and performed in the early months of 1728. During the next ten years, Fielding wrote eight long plays and more than fifteen short plays, which he called farces. Arthur Murphy, who wrote the first biography of Fielding in 1762, has summarized this achievement most tactfully:
