The origin of this book can be traced to a workshop entitled "Cultural Difference and the Literary Text," which was held during a conference of the German Association of American Studies at the John F. Kennedy Institute in Berlin. The enthusiasm of the participants and the quality of the contributions were equally impressive and inspiring and generated an ongoing debate that refused to come to an end. We finally decided to open the floor to a larger audience.
