The red hot typewriter: the life and times of John D. MacDonald: summary, description and annotation

Although John D. MacDonald published seventy novels and more than five hundred short stories in his lifetime, he is remembered best for his Travis McGee series. He introduced McGee in 1964 with The Deep Blue Goodbye. With Travis McGee, MacDonald changed the pattern of the hardboiled private detectives who preceeded him. McGee has a social conscience, holds thoughtful conversations with his retired economist buddy Meyer, and worries about corporate greed, racism and the Florida ecolgoy in a long series whose brand recognition for the series the author cleverly advanced by inserting a color in every title. Merrill carefully builds a picture of a man who in unexpected ways epitomized the Horatio Alger sagas that comprised his strict fathers secular bible. From a financially struggling childhood and a succession of drab nine-to-five occupations, MacDonald settled down to writing for a living (a lifestyle that would have horrified his father). He worked very hard and was...

The Red Hot Typewriter would only be tepid without the help of a number of people during my research and writing.

Stuart Towns, chairman of the Department of Communication Arts at the University of West Florida, was generous in granting me time off to do research and writing, as was Martha Saunders, acting dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at UWF. Sarah Russell, my graduate assistant during part of the work on this book, did valuable and essential research. The book would not have been possible without the dedication and help of the librarians and staff of the special collections department at the George Smathers Library at the University of Florida. Peter King, the author of the Gourmet Detective series and now the president of the Liars Club in Sarasota, gave me copies of a history of that organization. Leigh Patmagrian, then of the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, now of New College, was gracious in her help in collecting data on that institution and on Sarasota in general. Walter and Jean Shine provided invaluable aid in helping me find John D. MacDonald manuscripts that were almost impossible to get, and Leona Nevler, MacDonalds editor at Fawcett, provided assistance in understanding the publishing world MacDonald knew so well. I must also thank Ruth Cavin, who edited The Red Hot Typewriter and provided the help and insight that have made this book what it is. Jane Dystel, my agent, stuck with me all the way, providing moral support as well as leading me through the maze of the commercial publishing world. Moral support and occasional trivia answers were provided by Pat Murdock, Julie Hairston, Jim OKon, and Carol OKon. Of course, the book could never have been written without my wife, Jacinta, who helped me with my research and provided criticism and support throughout the whole research and writing process. And then theres the Queen of the Blues. She made it all happen.
