Medical Attention

Before using any tinnitus or decreased sound tolerance (hyperacusis, misophonia, phonophobia) coping tools, aids, devices, treatment, or therapy options, you need to get clearance first from your family doctor and/or ear specialist to make sure you have no medical conditions that need treating first.

If you havent already, see your family doctor if you have:

  • Sudden onset tinnitus
  • Sudden onset hyperacusis
  • Tinnitus in one ear only
  • Pulse-like tinnitus
  • Drainage, pain, or discomfort in one or both ears
  • Better hearing in one ear than the other
  • Dizziness (vertigo) or imbalance
  • Chronic worry or sadness (anxiety; depression)

Get to emergency services as soon as possible if you have:

  • Tinnitus that sounds like voices
  • Rapidly worsening tinnitus
  • Rapidly worsening hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Sudden onset hearing loss
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself or suicide

You are not alone. Many people have anxiety and depression because of T-DST. My T started in 1986 after a car accident caused whiplash, concussion, and neck injuries. Back then, it was true nothing could be done. I studied audiology hoping to be the first to find out when anything new came out. Still nothing could be done.

By the 1990s, I was very depressed and thinking of killing myself because I couldnt take my T anymore. But then new therapy approaches arrived at clinics.

In the past 20 years, people have used new coping tools, therapies, aids, and devices to cope better, including me. Something can be done.

ASSOCIATIONS & ORGANIZATIONS

Different associations and organizations have T helplines also for people with DST. You can contact trained people to talk to or contact if youre distressed and need support or help to find resources and care providers in your local area.

If youre not in crisis, dont use helplines. Association websites have T-DST facts, how to manage or cope better, the latest research news, and regular contact info. International associations include:
