INTRODUCTION

Welcome to One Flash!, my newest bag of tricks with all the latest flash photography techniques. This book follows up on the amazing success of my first book on flash, Creative Flash Photography, which appeared at just the right time and filled a previously neglected gap in the market. In that book, I used as many as seven flashes for some of the setups I described, which might have verged on overkill but definitely showed whats possible with these often underrated marvels of technology.

But not all photographers own seven flashes, and others simply dont want to carry that much gear on a shoot. So why not use just one flash? After all, the sun is our sole, primary light source on earth, yet it still offers a huge range of lighting possibilities.

And that is the basic concept behind this book. All the setups described in the workshop chapters can be reproduced using just one flashusually off-cameraand you will be amazed at what these fantastic devices can do. Not only can a flash illuminate a scene or subject, it can project colors and patterns, too. And, if a single light isnt enough for your photograph, I will show you how to produce multiple light sources using a single speedlight:

Picture 12The simplest way to double up the light is to combine available light with flash. For example, available light can be used to create an accent light produced by the sun or a highlight produced by a desk lamp.

Picture 13A different approach involves using flags, reflectors, and mirrors to split the light from your flash and send it in multiple directions.

Picture 14Last but not least, you can even fire a single flash multiple times in different places within the frame. This flash composite technique even works without darkening the space you are working in.

The most versatile way to use a single light source is to apply light painting techniques. The spectrum provided by xenon flashes is much better than that produced by LED flashlights, making them ideal for this type of work. Other features, such as stroboscopic flash and a modeling light, can transform a speedlight into a useful source of continuous light, too.

It is important to note that great photos and fascinating lighting dont always require a big budget. Even if some of todays high-end shoe-mount flash units cost more than a studio flash and offer sophisticated features like TTL, HSS/FP Sync, and built-in radio control for slave flash, you dont have to spend more than $50 on an inexpensive non-TTL flash to get enough power and high-quality light to create great images. Light modifiers such as flash umbrellas are also inexpensive; they cancost as little as $20. It is easy to put together a simple but effective flash kit for no more than the price of a quality camera bag.

Dont forget: your gear can grow with your needs and experience. On some shoots I use a 400-joule portable flash unit, and this book includes a guide that shows you how to build a powerful bare-bulb portable flash using two modified speedlights.

I hope you find this book and the workshops within it a great place to start with your flash photography. Things then get really interesting when you use your own creativity to combine and adapt the techniques explained here and begin to develop your own lighting toolbox.
