Dear photo detective ,
We need your help with a very important mission: solving the mystery of photography.
For several centuries, large numbers of experts have tried their hands at the problem, but they were blinded by technique and often became prisoners of their cameras, so most of the time all they did was scratch the surface of the problem . A lot of grown-ups have forgotten that if you want to create really cool pictures, having a nice camera is not enough; the most important thing is to know how to use your eyes, head, hands, legs, and heart!
And now that we have figured that out, we adult experts have made an important decision: since we have bumped up against our own limitations, we are passing the baton on to you .
So now its up to you, kidsthe torch of photography has been passed on to you...
... along with the honor of attempting to take on one of the greatest challenges of all time: deciphering the riddle of the creation of images in order to breathe new life into photography .
Today, we are putting our best young investigators on the case and I am happy to announce that you are one of them .
In order to solve the mystery of photography, you will have to carry out a lot of investigations, solve unfathomable riddles, and demonstrate all of the insight you are capable of.
Will you be able to find the right strategies so you can successfully complete every mission I send you on?
Will you have the patience and perseverance that you need in order to take the pictures that will reveal the key to the mystery, little by little ?
I want to thank you for having agreed , by opening this book, to meet this serious challenge . I am positive you will be equal to the mission that has been entrusted to you .
All of the photographers around the world are counting on you.
I wish you happy reading and great pictures !

A few words for the grown-ups
Initiating children into photography
An exploration of the creation of images
The goal of this book is for the child to explore the process of photography . The young reader will discover that framing and composition can allow him or her to truly control the content of images.
This book covers important topics like choosing a subject, knowing how to move the camera and move in space in order to capture ones environment, and exploring the possible interactions between a subject and the frame. All of these concepts are dealt with in a manner that is progressive and playful, so that the reader can discover for him- or herself what photography does and the pleasure of creating images.
The challenge? To learn and to understand; to take better pictures.
In the context of this process of exploration, working by trial and error, implementing a variety of strategies in order to find the best one, the image that is created is not an end in itself but rather a way to move forward .
As a result, this book has no intention of teaching the children and adolescents who read it to make pretty postcards, or even photos that are considered successful according to our adult criteria.
Therefore, I would encourage you not to expect your child to improve his or her photos in the way you might expect at first, or to produce images that are less odd than the ones she or he has taken so far. In fact, it should be just the opposite! I really hope that this book will push young readers to take even more surprising pictures than before as they experiment with images!
Support, encourage, accompany!
For these reasons, I recommend that you do not express any value judgments about the photos that your child takes, even if you find them disorienting. Be encouraging and curious about the childs photographic process at all times . Instead of saying Oh wow, that one really didnt come out at all, did it? or What a bizarre picture, show your interest and ask the child questions like, Thats interesting! What made you want to take that picture? What subject did you choose for this one? or How did you go about taking a picture of that?
