About the author
Ralph Clevenger grew up on the coast of North Africa and began diving in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea at the age of seven with his father. He eventually went on to study zoology and worked as a diver/biologist for the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California before attending Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. Ralph went on to work as an associate photographer with renowned nature photographer George Lepp and, in 1983, was offered a teaching position at Brooks Institute. He teaches courses in nature photography, stock photography, video production, and undersea photography.
Ralph has traveled throughout the world on assignment, including Australia, South America, Antarctica, and Africa. His clients include Monterey Bay Aquarium, MacGillivray Freeman Films, Fox Sports Net, The Nature Conservancy, Denali National Park & Preserve Wilderness Access Center, the U.S. National Park Service, and the NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries. His publication credits include Audubon, AQUA Magazine, Islands, Oceans, Outside, Orion Nature Quarterly, National Geographic, National Geographic Traveler, Popular Photography & Imaging, Natures Best Photography, National Geographic Books, Smithsonian Books, Sierra Club Books, and many other national and international publications. Ralphs stock images are represented worldwide by Corbis.
Foreword
By George Lepp
Some folks are born teachers, and some born photographers, but the accomplished photographer who can also teach is a rare gift indeed. Such a man is Ralph Clevenger, who has been working on the cutting edge of this field for thirty years but never tires of sharing his insights and skills with students of the art and craft of nature photography.
Ive known Ralph as a colleague and friend since his graduation from Brooks Institute. Shortly after graduation he worked with me on a photographic project for Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo to produce images for educational filmstrips. He brought with him not only strong technical ability, but also a great background in zoology. We photographed everything from flower arranging to grading eggs for quality. Even then we were both into teaching!
Since those early days, Ralph has traveled the world, generated a significant body of work in the field of outdoor photography, and become a highly successful stock and assignment photographer. He brings this experience to the classroom and helps his students make the leap from the controlled educational setting to the real world of professional digital and video photography. His former students tell me that Ralph is an exceptionally effective teacher who motivates them to master the skills and perfect the techniques that will lead them to achieve their own creative visions.
Ralph brings this same combination of expertise and inspiration to Photographing Nature. The illustrations in this book provide the proof that Ralph is a world-class photographer. The teaching format, including questions and assignments (a.k.a. homework!), draws on Ralphs many years as an instructor at one of the countrys premier photography schools. But Ralph doesnt want you to stop with this book. He also provides a selected bibliography of resources that will let you expand your pursuit of nature photography.
Most people will never have the chance to take Ralphs nature photography course at Brooks Institute, but with Photographing Nature , everyones invited to the classroom. So dig in, be informed and inspired, and let Ralph lead you to greater enjoyment and satisfaction in your own photographic endeavors. For me, and for Ralph, thats what great teaching is all about.
Chapter . Introduction
I never dreamed of being a photographer or a teacher. I wanted to be a marine biologist. And I became one, working at one of the worlds most prestigious marine science institutions. But much of science is mundane and tedious, spending time in labs analyzing data collected in the field, and my passion was being in the fieldbeing out in nature. An important part of being a scientist is recording what you see, and I soon realized that photography and filmmaking were my tickets to spending as much time as possible in nature. So I became a photographer.
Making a living from photography has never been simple. When I graduated from Brooks Institute, I realized that I needed to embrace not just nature photography, but many aspects of commercial photography, in order to generate enough income to survive. But I promised myself it would all be outdoors. This broad experience in photography led to an offer to teach for my alma mater. Im not a teacher. Im a photographer who teaches. For me, this is an important distinction.
