I was a young stablegirl at that time. Not something one would commonly find back in those days. Society was largely patriarchal out in the West. Nonetheless, Ms. Rose was something different; all those who worked on her ranch were woman.

Rose was a woman of power and authority, amongst other wonderful things. I highly respected her. I like to think more so than most, even if she walked on the strange side or that the town of Alpine liked to whisper behind her back about things concerning witchcraft. She taught me everything I know about horses. She was a fine breeder, and had herself a collection of Mustangs that she herself said came down wild from the mountains. Only she knew how to break them. That is until the years went by and I to was able to get into the round pen, roping and riding the orneriest and wildest bunch of horses you could ever find in the Rocky Mountains. I loved the mountains, the horses and other wild things that called them their home. I had a special bond with them; it was as though my soul is connected with the wild and rugged hearts of the beasts. I knew why they were rebellious; why they fought so hard to keep me from breaking them. I was able to show them by riding them hard in the round pen that they had no reason to fight me, because I was a rebel too. For that, in my third year of service, I received the assistance of two of my own apprentices to train in grooming and breaking of those magnificent wild beasts.

In the year of 1897, there were seven of us stablegirls in total. We got along splendidly with one another. Even on holidays and Sundays our sisterhood would gather at the master's house for socializing and maybe have a beer or two for all our day of hard work. During the winter months we would substitute for a hot cup of coffee, or sometimes, some fancy hot drink made with chocolate that only our master could afford. I remember our evenings next to the fireplace fondly.

Of the seven, there was Lacy Biedrom, a girl whose heart shone like gold. I liked her second only to my mistress Rose for her good heart and gentle soul. Unfortunately, she would be the first to leave us. It would not be for a long time after when I would learn where she had gone. It was unfortunate that I did not give her a proper farewell as I would be allowed with all the others.

After Lacy, I most liked Arthur, a melancholic lass whom I always liked for her masculine name and hard working, rugged and tough nature. We had nicknamed her Dray for being like a powerful draft horse. She was built big and strong, and could do the task that none of us other girls could do. She wasn't one for many words. When it came to our master Ms. Rose, she loved spending the evening quietly in one corner listening to her stories.

And no one could tell a story like Jennet Rose. Her imagination was absolutely sprawling with the fantastic. She would spin such tales of distant and far away places and of great mystical lands that bewildered us on how she could create such vivid descriptions of made-up places. She could have filled a hundred books with all her tales of mad romance and adventure. She populated them with the wildest of things; dragons, unicorns and other mystic beasts we had never heard the names of before. She would give them personalities and mannerisms that as she told her stories would make you hardly think of them as beasts. This got a little strange when she would mix in some eroticism into them. She did this more often than not. In fact, Rose did not follow the rules of proper society at all when it came to sex. No doubt it was the reason she was scorned by the townspeople. Yet, as to why they feared her I could never quite figure. She was very wealthy and did fund much of the town, but wealth couldn't command the type of fear the people had for her. She was a commanding person who spoke her mind as well as anything else she thought was worth speaking about. To her, if something sounded interesting or made you feel good, then she wasn't shy to talk about it, or throw it into her stories. Us girls had grown used to it and felt it was our special little secret, even if Rose flaunted her strange ideals so recklessly. Nonetheless, when one had the power and money our master had, she could probably gotten away with murder.

I adored my master, even with all her quirks and strange stories. She had given me everything, and for that I owed her everything. It was also nice, in its way, to be part of that power and influence that she wielded. We girls received a special kind of fear and respect from the other folk down in town. Some of us liked it more than others. I remained largely indifferent because I, with Dray, my master and a couple others, mostly stayed home on our ranch. I was happy and content on our little hill with all the forested back country behind it occupied only with my horses and my girls.

There was so much to explore there and so many secrets to unlock. I always tried to get Rose to tell me more about her land, and how she came to acquire it. Instead, by the warmth of the fireplace, she would tell us all a wild tall-tale about how she came here with a woman from Africa who once was her servant and her lover. From the Dark Continent she brought with her secrets of an ancient god. From him she learned how to open magical doors by also becoming his lover. In this tale she claimed the land behind her home originally belonged to this god, but she was able to win it for herself and bring it out here to the West so she could fully unravel it. She always said we would inherit it one day - Telling us that though her lover had left her, he would one day return to take her back. She also teased that she would share him with us; for he was a god with many lovers, and that what was hers was ours. I didn't know what that meant, and thought of it as one of the many products of her eccentric demeanor.
