Dedicated to my husband, David Seay , who always believes that I can be and do anything I want in life. And to our four beautiful children, Emma, Evan, Hayden, and Stella. I love you with all my heart.

I wrote this book for all the general dentists out ther e. As clinicians, most of us ar e always thinking about ways that we can be better at what we do. We learn dif ferent techniques and protocols to deliver better patient car e. Wi th endless CE, videos, social media, online learning, there are many ways for us to access information on many differ ent subjects, photography being one of them. I want to share all the essentials of dental photography , but I also want to awaken the artist within you. I want you to look at your subjects with a new set of eyes.
Photography is personal, and it is constantly changing. Photography for me is dif fer ent than some other facets of dentistry . It has a power that is unspoken and transformative. Wi th just a visual image, you can change the mind-set of a patient and elicit emotion fr om both the subject and the photographer . It is art. It is dynamic.
It is simple. It is complex. It is powerful. Pre face IV
My fondest memories, and those that had the most pr ofound impact on me, began with photographs of my family . I r emember hearing stories my whole life about the V ietnam W ar , coming to America, and the struggles and challenges that my family faced. I would imagine Vietnam and what coming to America looked like and how my parents actually gr ew up.
I formulated an idea in my head. But seeing actual photos from Vietnam instantly solidied or contradicted the things I had imagined. These out-of-focus, blurry photos that were so perfectly aged, took me back in time to imagine what life was really like in Vietnam. Seeing a photo of my mother at the same age I was helped me to connect to how differ ent, yet the same, we were. I instantly r ecognized myself in my dad s round face, and I wonder ed if he was like me at that age. Through a single photo, I was able to transport myself thr ough time, distance, and circumstances to conjur e the imagery in my mind.
I know how the photos made me feel. V P REFA CE
I completed dental school with no photography training. I never owned anything but a point- and-shoot camera. Aside from taking a one-hour/week photography elective in high school for four months, I lear ned to truly use my camera only when I knew I needed it for dentistry . We can all learn how to take photos. The pr ocess is not difcult.
What takes time, patience, and vision is to nd your inner artist so you can capture the photo that you see with your eyes and your mind. It is more than just a pr operly exposed and framed photo; it is about capturing the essence of what you create or see or the very spirit of the person in front of your lens. Yo ur eye can be encouraged and cultivated to see what you want to create. W e all gro w and evolve; as we do so, our art can help us document our jour ney . SEE. Art Es thetics Dental Photogra phy VI
