It is a well-known fact that, like claret, historians of science improve and mellow with the passage of time. Returning to papers written in the vigour of youth is nevertheless a curious and chastening experience. S.T.Coleridge was advised at school to go through whatever he had written, and when he came upon anything he thought especially fine, to strike it out. His teacher was clearly right, and sometimes a fine phrase insinuated into an old paper may here trip up the reader, as it did this one. Looking back over more than thirty years makes one smile indulgently at brash remarks, or sometimes wince at overconfidence; and then sometimes feel surprise at the perceptiveness and sharp wittedness of the younger me. It was said of Joseph Priestley and of William Paley that they never wrote an obscure sentence: how splendid it would be to be confident of doing the same.
Pierre Duhem said that there are two kinds of mind: the broad and shallow, and the deep and penetrating. There is no doubt that mine is in the former category. Some of these papers were written because after reading or hearing something, I had a great urge to say my piece; but many of them were commissioned. What a joy it is to be asked to do something, if one is basically rather indolent: pulling things together; responding to a deadline; negotiating (like Christopher Wren over St Paul's) so that the editor, organizer or publisher has to accept one's strengths and limitations; getting it reasonably right on the night.
