Teen readers were drawn to such books because they could identify with both the characters and the situations depicted in these raw and edgy works of fiction. In Radical Reads 2: Working with the Newest Edgy Titles for Teens, Bodart continues where the first book left off, examining more than a hundred titles published since the previous edition. The books featured here are engaging and tough, yet well written and accessible to readers. For each novel, Bodart lists the main characters, major themes and subject areas, and offers a brief summary. Along with providing book report ideas, she cites the strengths of each work, excerpts important reviews, and lists any awards the book has received. Indexed by author, title, subject, curriculum area, reading level, interest level, and genre, Radical Reads 2 is an indispensable tool for librarians, teachers, and parents alike, and will appeal especially to teens looking for relevant and topical fiction.

There a lot of people to thank for their contributions to this book. First of all, Ed Kurdyla, whose patience made this a better book, with more recent and more controversial titles than the first edition. Ken Haycock, Director, School of Library and Information Science, San Jose State University, who supported my work by approving my requests for graduate assistants to work with me. Patty Campbell, Beth Wrenn-Estes, and Teri Lesesne, who went over title lists with me and suggested what to include and what to omit. Patty also graciously sent me copies of the titles she recommended. Cathi Dunn MacRae, who encouraged me to Just finish it! when I badly needed to hear that. Dana Weber, Jonathan Hunt, and Sarah Kimmel, SLIS graduates who worked with me on the first part of the project, transcribing entries and locating reviews and awards. Casandria Crane, a SLIS student who located the bibliographic information on all the various formats for the titles, transcribed entries, and looked for reviews and awards for several semestersand never complained when I dropped titles shed worked on and added new ones to be completed. She also updated the bibliography of articles on the value of controversial literature for teens, helped me find lost entries, counted titles over and over, was incredibly patient, and never let me know if she was tearing her hair out about my unreasonable demands! Her contribution to this book cannot be overstated. And finally, Blair Andrews at Scarecrow, who promised me the cover would look radical and came through on that promise in spades!

This is for the teens whose souls are already scarred. May they use these titles to heal, to grow strong, to succeed, to overcome, and to achieve their dreams.

This is also for the courageous authors who write books to help soothe those scarred souls, knowing that their work may be challenged, even as it helps and heals the teens for whom they wrote it.

Finally, this is for the equally courageous librarians and teachers determined to make sure these difficult titles are available to the teens who need them and willing to fight battles to overcome the challenges these books will face.
