PEI LANDSCAPE. DAY Atlantic waves crash against the rugged rocksalong the beach. Seagulls cry in the background. A light breezeripples the water in a calm inlet surrounded by duckweed. Two girlschase each other on a quiet beach. EXT.
GREEN GABLES DAY A quaint, white house with a green roofcalled Green Gables lies nestled in a peaceful meadow surrounded bya forest of dark fir trees. EXT. AVONLEA DAY Sheep graze in the long grass in a farmyardoutside Avonlea. A white steepled church can be seen in thedistance. EXT. EXT. EXT.
AVONLEA SHORE ROAD. DAY ANNE bicycles across the picturesquelandscape of Prince Edward Island. She passes a seaside mansion onher left and heads toward a forest of dark fir trees. Seagulls canbe heard squawking overhead. EXT. Lawrence. Lawrence.
The wind blows in her face and sends a chillof inspiration through her. She recites several lines of prose toherself as she stares out across the ocean. ANNE "Where is sleep?" "Over the mountains of the moon, down thevalley of the shadow, 'neath the waves of the deep gulf stream",replied the handsome duke in dark, languid tones. ANNE runs down the hill and plops down in thesand. She opens her bag frantically and fishes for her pen and hernotebook. She takes her manuscript out of its file, flips open tothe last page and begins scribbling said prose down, mumbling thewords to herself.
She looks up, chewing on the end of her pencil,trying to improve the sentence. ANNE (CONT'D) ...in dark languid tones.... In dark foreboding tones.... (She starts to write again) He fervently stroked her alabaster brow andshe fell under his cloak of darkness. ANNE falls backwards into the sandmelodramatically, lost in a daydream. EXT. EXT.
WHITE SANDS/SUMMERHOME. DAY A sprawling, clapboard summerhome adjoining alighthouse overlooks the Gulf. ANNE'S pages are carried across theyard of the property by the light breeze and stick to the frontverandah screen. A group of wealthy vacationers who have beenbathing in the cove sit outside having a picnic. ELVIRA EVANS, agraceful and fashionably dressed chatelaine, converses with MORGANHARRIS, a tall brooding man in his mid thirties. HARRIS There you are.
ELVIRA notices ANNES predicament, and pointsher out to MORGAN. ELVIRA Morgan, Look. Do you think she needshelp? EXT. AVONLEA SHORE ROAD/DUNES. DAY MORGAN looks across the lawn and sees thatANNE is in trouble, now frantically trying to gather her manuscriptpages as they flutter across the dunes. EXT. EXT.
AVONLEA SHORE ROAD/DUNES. DAY ANNE is gathering the strewn pages of hermanuscript as MORGAN approaches. She looks up to find the dappergentleman staring down on her. HARRIS Are youa journalist? ANNE (flustered)(chuckling) No...a...a teacher. No...I'm a writer...actually, I-I writebooks. HARRIS nods sagely and smiles.
HARRIS Oh-ho, books? He stares for a moment at ANNE charmed byher. ANNE crouches down, clutching onto her papers as shespeaks. ANNE Books. HARRIS I hope nothing is spoiled or missing. ANNE (laughs) Doesn't matter. I keep it all filed away inmy imagination anyway.
ELVIRA approaches from across the dunes. ELVIRA Morgan, Morgan! We'll be late for ourluncheon! MORGAN hands ANNE one of her papers. ANNE Thank you. MORGAN Excuse me. ELVIRA takes him by the hand, and they strollback to the house. EXT. EXT.
AVONLEA SCHOOL -- DAY A group of school children come charging upover the crest of a hill, kicking up sand as they sing andlaugh. CHILDREN No more pencils, no more books, no moreteachers dirty looks. (continues under following scenes) EXT. AVONLEA SCHOOLHOUSE. DAY ANNE SHIRLEY, is an attractive youngschoolmarm of about 18, with splendid auburn hair, done up in thelatest "Gibson girl" fashion, bids an affectionate farewell to thelast of the stragglers leaving her schoolroom to begin their summervacation. ANNE Bye.
Goodbye, Barbara Shaw. Don't forget yourlunch pail! GIRL #1 Goodbye, Miss Shirley. ANNE Bye. JACOB (overlapping) Goodbye. ANNE Goodbye, Jacob. Good luck in your job at thesmithy.
GIRL #2 Goodbye, Miss Shirley! BOY #1 Bye, Miss Shirley! ANNE Bye (indistinct) GIRL #3 (overlapping) Goodbye, Miss Shirley! BOY #2 Bye, Miss Shirley! ANNE (overlapping) Bye-bye. BOY #3 Bye, Miss Shirley! GIRL #4 Bye, Miss Shirley! GIRL #5 Bye, Miss Shirley. See you next year. MINNIE MAY Bye, Miss Shirley. ANNE (laughs) Goodbye, Minnie May. EXT. EXT.
AVONLEA SCHOOLHOUSE -- DAY ANTHONY PYE and TOMMY BELL hid ein the shedbehind the school and prepare to smoke cigarettes. TOMMY Is that how you smoke it? ANTHONY Don't you know anything? You've got to lickit to make the paper stick! MINNIE MAY sneaks up beside the shed, pokesher head in the doorway, sticks out her tongue and gives the boys"raspberries" ANTHONY (CONT) What do you want? MINNIE MAY My mother says smoking makes your mouth andyour ears stick out! ANTHONY Your mother's an old wind-bag! MINNIE MAY No she is not! I'm gonna tell Miss Shirleyyou two been smoking! ANTHONY You do and I'll lock you up and sic my dog onyou! MINNIE MAY Will not! Can't catch me! (she raspberriesthem and runns off. The boys catch her easily) Help! Ahhh! Let mego! ANTHONY Let's see how you like being locked up, youlittle tattle-tale! The boys drag her over to the shed and lockher inside. MINNIE MAY I'm gonna tell on you two! I'm gonna tell onyou two! You are bad boys ANTHONY See how you like that, you littletattle-tale! TOMMY Ya! And we're gonna sic his dog on you if yousay anything! The boys smile at each other and walk away;leaving MINNIE MAY in the shed, calling for help. INT. AVONLEA SCHOOLHOUSE DAY ANNE erases the farewell message she haswritten to the class on the blackboard: With fond remembrance tothe brightest, most imaginative class in Prince Edward Island, yourteacher, Miss Shirley.
She gathers her briefcase and her apple,takes a last look around the room, then strolls out the door. EXT. AVONLEA SCHOOLHOUSE -- DAY ANNE rides her bicycle past the shed andhears MINNIE MAY's cries. MINNIE MAY (from inside the shed) I want out! ANNE (as she opens the door) Why Minnie May! MIINIE MAY Anthony Pye and Tommy Bell locked me in causeI was gonna tell on those two. They were smoking cigarettes. AndAnthony's gonna sic his watchdog on me! ANNE He'll do no such thing.
Now you run along.Your mother will be wondering where you are. MINNIE MAY All right, Miss Shirley. EXT. BRIDGE AND BROOK -- DAY MR. PYE and his son ANTHONY sit on the banksand fish. ANNE comes over the bridge with her bicycle.
MR PYE Good-day, Miss Shirley! ANNE Good afternoon, Mr. Pye. MR PYE Must be glad school's out. I hope my Anthonybehaved himself this year ANNE Anthony's grades are quite good and he iswell liked by everyone. I understand from Minnie-May Barry that youhave an excellent watch-dog looking out for you, Anthony. MR PYE Oh, and that's a fact.
No foxes around ourchicken coop this year, Miss Shirley. ANTHONY looks very guilty. He knows he's beencaught. ANNE A finer watch-dog you'll never see, so MinnieMay was just telling me. Oh, and thank you Anthony for volunteeringwith Tommy to whitewash the outhouse for me next Monday. I hear youtwo are excellent painters.
