When the others went east,
Lucy always went west.
She never seemed happy
To stay with the rest.
Each day she would dream
About learning to fly,
And what she would see
Of the world from the sky.
Meet Lucy, an independent-minded Canada goose who is hatched in the beautiful northern wilderness. Her first look at the world is filled with sunshine, wild rivers, lakes, and her close and loving family. Along with her brothers and sister, she is taught the value of working together by her patient mother. But Lucy has other ideas. She is certain that fitting in is not for her.
When the time comes for the fall migration, Lucy is determined to go it alone. She hopes to reach Texas before her family and friends and to prove that her way is the right way at least for her. All too soon, however, Lucy finds that she is lonely, cold, and frightened. How Lucy resolves her difficulty and finally reaches Texas tells us much about the value of cooperation.
Holly Beas delightful, rhyming text coupled with Joe Boddys brilliantly colorful and playful illustrations make Lucy Goose Goes to Texas a fun way to teach children the enduring value of teamwork.

This is Lucy. She lives in a shell.
Its smooth and its white and she knows it so well.
Its cozy inside; shes toasty and warm.
Her needs are all met, and shes safe from all harm.
But something has happened can you see a crack?
Her home has grown larger; theres no looking back.
She sees sunshine, a lake, and soft, fuzzy friends,
Three brothers, a sister, and a river that bends.
Her mother is gentle and shows them the way.
They learn how to waddle, to eat grass, and play.
They all listen closely and learn how to speak.
Lucy says, Honk! but it sounds more like Peep.
Her mom says, Dont worry! Youll grow big and loud.
Youll learn how to fly, and youll make your mom proud.
Now its time for Goose School; lets all jump in the river!
Youve got work to do with your brothers and sister.
While all of the goslings would swim in a row,
That s not the direction that Lucy would go.
And when they would stretch their wings up toward the sky,
Lucyd be watching a frog swimming by.
When the others went east, Lucy always went west.
She never seemed happy to stay with the rest.
Each day she would dream about learning to fly,
And what she would see of the world from the sky.
One day her mom called them down to the lake.
Its time to discuss the big trip that well take.
When the weather gets cool and the leaves start to fall,
Well head down to Texas and have us a ball!
We go there each winter; it gets too cold here.
Well leave before long, when the first frost appears.
Well flap and well fly and well travel for days.
Well all stick together cause thats the goose way.
You11 see frost in the mornings and sunsets of red,
Snow-covered mountains and dry riverbeds.
Therell be bayous and orchards and aqua-blue streams;
Its the most beautiful country that youve ever seen.
And when you reach Texas, why, youll be surprised,
At tumbleweeds, cowboys, and wide-open skies.
Those Texans all love us when we come each year.
When we start to land, theyll give us a cheer!
But Lucy had other ideas in her head.
