Read Woke Books are created in partnership with Cicely Lewis, the Read Woke librarian. Inspired by a belief that knowledge is power, Read Woke Books seek to amplify the voices of people of the global majority (people who are of African, Arab, Asian, and Latin American descent and identify as not white), provide information about groups that have been disenfranchised, share perspectives of people who have been underrepresented or oppressed, challenge social norms and disrupt the status quo, and encourage readers to take action in their community.
This series tackles issues including mass incarceration, gun violence, immigration, and police brutality. Each book opens with a personal letter from series executive editor Cicely Lewis that contains a little bit of the backstory in the creation of the book and what she wants readers to gain from it. The series is visually appealing and uses small text boxes to provide more information about the pictures included. Each book contains reflection points, take action segments, a time line of events, source notes, a list of suggested reading titles, an index, and a glossary of terms. VERDICT This series is perfect for classroom discussions on social justice.-School Library Journal

LETTER FROM CICELY LEWIS
LETTER FROM CICELY LEWIS
Dear Reader,
I started the Read Woke challenge in response to the needs of my
students. I wanted my students to read books that challenged social
norms, gave voice to the silenced, and sought to challenge the status
quo. Have you ever felt as if the truth was being hidden from you?
Have
you ever felt like adults are not telling
you the full story because you are too
young? Well, I believe you have a right to
know about the issues that are plaguing
our society. I believe that you have a
right to hear the truth.
I created Read Woke Books because
I want you to be knowledgeable and
compassionate citizens. You will be the
leaders of our society soon, and you
need to be equipped with knowledge so
that you can treat others with the dignity
and respect they deserve. And so you
can be treated with that same respect.
Cicely Lewis
As you turn these pages, learn about how history has impacted the
things we do today. Hopefully you can be the change that helps to make
our world a better place for all.
Cicely Lewis, Executive Editor

any money she had to buy pills. Soon she had dropped out
of school. After three years of struggling with addiction, she

world famous. Rapper Eminem struggled with prescription
drug addiction for years. His fame gave him more access to
pills. But he decided to get clean for his children.
Eminem talks openly about his recovery from addiction
