WARNING:
This is not your typical worldbuildinginformation.
If youre not careful, you may have fun.
Readers should know this is not a book aboutwriting per sethough what you create through this guide iscertainly intended to serve you in that process. This guide isabout generating raw material and organizing it. Theinformation itself doesnt need to be grammatically correct, written in breathtaking prose or even make sense to another livingsoul.
This guide is about creating material tospark ideas and wonder in your own mind, so you can write whateveryou desire.
There was considerable stress over how Ishould construct and share this information. How to organize it andpresent it. It had to be in a form that was useful to you, thereaderwhile allowing me towell, be myself.
The last thing I wanted to do was lie toyoulook up fancy words to use, just so youd think I wassmart.
In the end, I decided to take anatural approach.
You see, Im a father. My children are brightand beautifuleach with a propensity to write, draw and challengethe very limits of my own intelligence through their questions. They are the pride and joy of my existence. Truth is, theresnothing I love more in this life than being a father.
Part of this joy comes when I can help themthrough our conversations.
Its funny how so many parents fail to telltheir own youth a simple truth: were only a hop, skip and jumpfurther down the road than they are in life. We dont know it all,no matter how much we try to bluff. So why not accept the fact thatwere not just providers and protectors, but special guides, hereto assist them in their own journey? I go so far as to tell my kidsthat Im a convenient source of information on what NOT to do attimes. In the end, being a father is about communication, perspective and teaching children how to think forthemselves.
Thats what this guide ismy attempt to showyou what I have done through the years and why. I wont treat youlike a child, but I want to share information with you in the sameway I do with my own family.
By showing you the patterns used to write myown books, theme games and to build my business, I hope to explainthe patterns that work for me. This guide isnt so much of a HowTo as it is a Why To book.
By studying my examples and then applying thesteps shown, youll be able to progress independently, as fast asyou desire.
So consider this book aconversation.
Theres no right or wrong herejust aperspective that Id like to offer, along with examples of actualapplication.
Its your job to take it from there.

Introduction
You have an idea.
Its a brilliant idea. No really, itsbrilliantforget what other people tell you. Trust yourself. Allgreat story ideas have a beginning somewhere.
That idea may be a person, it may be a place.Perhaps its an event or something valuable, sought after orobtained.
The fantastic things about worldbuilding isit can be likened to a long hall with many doors. You dont have toworry about what door to openjust choose one. Any door. The reasonwhy, is once you open the door, youll find another hall withdoors. As you open the doors, you will, over time, come back to aroom where the adjoining door has already been opened.
Everything connects sooner or laterifyou let it.
Regardless of where your first idea comesfrom, or what it isthis guide will show you how to make it grow.By using a set of clear, specific perspectives, prompts and tools, you will be able to create a dynamic foundation and background tobuild a story upon. One with depth, diversity and flavor. A worldthat readers will absorb, enjoy and desire to return to again andagain.
I hope youre ready, because Im so excitedto show you just how brilliant you truly are.
There were a few struggles with the outline, only because its hard not to have big expectations when it comesto manuals and writing tools. For me to justify putting these wordsinto print, this guide had to meet certain standards. When Iconsider buying any guide for myself, it has to add value to mywriting process, so why should I publish anything less for you?
You may not think this important, but whenyou writeyou are more likely to be successful (in both process andresults) if you write what is important to you. I specifically meanwhat you like as a reader. What do your passions lean towards? Whatare your favorite books? What have you read the most of? If youwrite what you love to read, the work is usually better, freshandas a reader, one is able to feel your intent to a largerdegree.
Thats why this guide had to meet my ownpersonal expectations. As a reader, I wanted to see a few (meaningeight) points accomplished to have real value:
1) The guide had to be easy to use andencourage its use through the design. That means it had tolook good =).
2) Provide a solid, creative manual with definitionsusing plain language. This is to help a wider age range of users. There are educated writers out there who may mock this work and myweak vocabulary, but thats alrightI didnt write this forthem.
3) The guide needed to address common topicsbutprovide a unique perspective, backed by a set of easily accessibleresources. There are a growing number of books about worldbuildingon the marketsome of them quite good. What I wanted was somethingfun to read, encouraging and easy to follow. This would hopefullyallow writers to take their skills to the next level if they sodesired.
4) It had to be built around a step-by-stepprocessBUT, allow the writer to use the steps out-of-order. Theintent was to provide a product that worked for both the linearthinker (not me) and the non-linear thinker (me, me,me).
5) Provide templates for the writer to use until(and if) they decided to make their own. Templates for developingcharacters, animals, plant life and more.
6) Present the product in a journal format. It had to be something you would write inwhich meant it also hadto be largersuch as a 8.5 x 11 format, rather than a 6 x 9 (orsmaller) dimensions. At the same timethere had to be a digitalversion for the growing use of eReaders, which meant an alternativeway to provide the templates mentioned above.
7) The design margins should be custom as wellsothe spine could eventually be removed, the pages punched withholesand the contents placed in a 3-Ring binder. It didnt have tobe used that way, but I wanted that kind of an option to allow forexpansion. This would also allow for completecustomizationgrouping the front content together as referencematerials, while the content created (by the writer) could begrouped and organized to make their own individual book.
