CONTENTS
FOREWORD
I was brought up on a delicious diet of BBC Radio 4. Other people may have breathed plain air but for us the air was heavily laden with Radio 4 classics such as Woman's Hour, The Archers, Today, Just a Minute, Letter from America, World at One... and of course, Gardeners' Question Time! I think it would be fair to say that I inherited this addiction with enthusiasm. After all who wouldn't delight in the opportunity to soak up information, humour and thought-provoking programmes whilst going about one's daily life?
So it was with a good deal of interest that I investigated For the Love of Radio 4: An Unofficial Companion. To my relief and pleasure I can confirm that this little book is packed to bursting with fascinating facts about everything from wavelengths where the station can be heard to presenters' thoughts and anecdotes galore. It traces the development, background and evolution of many of my favourite programmes, yours too I expect. Delve a little deeper and more facts, figures and comment in the book make listening to those favourite programmes even better. After all, having a good friend is one thing but being privileged to knowledge of that friend's innermost thoughts, workings and relationships puts your friendship on an even higher level.
For the Love of Radio 4 is a book to read at any time, in any place, all in one go or, I think better still, to delve into and savour as the mood takes you. Unofficial Companion it may be, but it is definitely one for my bookshelf, bedside or bag.
