Preface
Baby boomers, gen X, millennials, no matter the name, each generation has its batch of teenagers. While the emotional ups and downs, the desire to fit in, the excitements and worries of navigating middle school and high school are the same across the generational gap, the current generation, generation Z, is experiencing life in a way no other generation has. Technology has taken over the world and is a major influence in the shape of the lives of this generation. Because of this influx of technology over the last twenty years, the generation gap between contemporary teens and adults is wider than ever.
But even with this generation gap, even with access to the world at their fingertips, teens are still teens. Theyre still children trying to learn how to move into the adult world. Its up to the adults in their lives to figure out how to bridge that generation gap and help them maneuver into that world.
Teen Services Today; A Practical Guide for Librarians will help you navigate the sometimes murky, sometimes scary, but always exciting waters of teen services. Public libraries and public librarians have a responsibility to assist any and all patrons who walk through our doors to the best of our abilities, and teens are no exception. In fact, teens tend to be an underserved population in many libraries across the country. Its up to you, the teen librarian, to make sure the needs of the teens are being met. For many library staff, especially new librarians or paraprofessionals assigned to work with teens, that can seem a little daunting.
