ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to express my appreciation to the many individuals who have patiently helped and encouraged me in the preparation of this book. Particular thanks must go to the talented Lisa Welch Riggs for her assistance with my original manuscript and to Archie Hood for his photographic expertise and guidance. Special thanks to Jack Reid, Gordon MacKenzie and Christopher Schink for their unfailingly good advice. I am grateful to Barbara McKay and Tim and Doug Hopper of H.K. Holbein for their generosity and support. In addition, John Heikkila, Larry Barton, Anthony Batten, Marijke and Harriet McCaig, and Susanne and David Massie, all of whom provided much assistance and contributions.
It has been my great fortune to have the pleasure of working with my editors James Markle and Gina Rath. I also appreciate the skills of Pam Wissman and the creative staff at North Light Books.
Thanks also to my enthusiastic students who prompted me to assemble my ideas and who continually encourage and challenge me in developing and fine-tuning the strategies and exercises that are the foundation of this book.
I extend a heartfelt thank you to my beautiful children, Jamie and Eric, for their assistance and understanding throughout my severe obsession with this book, and to my parents, GiGi and the Frayne gang, who believe in me even when I am unbelievable.
Most of all I'd like to thank my husband and partner, Barry, for putting up with me and all of my big ideas. My dreams and schemes always end up meaning more work for him, as when minor house repairs became major renovations or a little landscaping project required a backhoe. This book is no exception. Barry has assumed the tasks of grocery shopping and laundry without complaint. He has become a terrific cook and housekeeper during the many years that it has taken to pull this book together.
DEDICATION

underpaintings
laying the groundwork

getting
into shapes
Become a shape makeryou will simplify and greatly improve your artwork. By designing with shapes, instead of attempting to recreate things, you can produce creative and original artworks and make the experience of painting more rewarding and satisfying.
working with glazes
and building layers
These projects have been designed to teach you how to weave your negative shapes together and to build with layers for a variety of subject matter. Along with learning how to glaze colors, you will discover two different strategies for working in the negative: how to develop florals and still life arrangements by working from the front to the back and how to build landscapes from the ground up.
