FOREWORD

I first heard of Dorothy DeLay when I was in my teens. She was a colleague of my father, so that from the start my story with her has not been about going out for coffee every day but about her tremendous gifts.
Dorothy is this fountain of plenty that never stops. She just keeps on bringing these little geniigeniusesto me: Midori, Sarah Chang, Gil Shaham, and others. I have worked with many of her former students, including Itzhak Perlman and Shlomo Mintz.
On the American scene, she is absolutely one of the foremost violin teachers. She has the great good fortune of collecting talent from all over the world, and not just soloists. Ninety-five percent of violin talent goes into orchestras of all kinds, and these excellent products of Dorothy DeLay's studio at Juilliard go not only to the greatest orchestras but to all kinds of orchestras everywhere. So we are all very, very grateful to her.
Soloists are something else. The soloist is one you cannot stop, like a meteor. The soloist will go his or her own way, so it is especially important that Dorothy is also a mother figure to everybody. She is there every day for them and guides them through their early life.
