Foreword
Loving business and desiring to learn more about it, I always wanted to study for an MBA. However, like so many people, I became caught up in a highly successful growing business which left me no time to consider even a part-time MBA. After my first business, I almost immediately set up another, and so the MBA never happened. But with every year that passes, although I know more about business than the year before, I also know that there is more I want to know than ever. I have read material about and by a number of the business gurus featured in this book, but longed to have the time to read much more. In todays world, it seems time is our most precious commodity, and so very few of us have the time to read anywhere near as much as we would like.
This book is a great solution for me and I hope it will prove the same for you. It is designed to summarize the key theories each guru has developed and to provide enough context and background for you to grasp the basics of them all. I would expect that everyone reading this book will want to go on to read more about or by some of the thought leaders included here; one key objective of this book, therefore, is to guide you to decide which thinkers you would like to learn more about.
The pace of change in business has picked up substantially in the last decade, with digital capabilities challenging established business models in many industries. We have included what we believe to be the best mix of classic business thinking and the best of the new wave of digital visionaries. Inevitably, we have had to exclude a number of worthy gurus.
I hope this book will prove useful to a very broad audience: from business studies students at schools and colleges, middle managers hungry to learn more, to entrepreneurs running their own business. Please do let us know what you think of Business Gurus. We expect to issue updated editions in the future, bringing in newer thought leaders and incorporating feedback from readers. Please email your feedback to businessgurusfeedback@ crimsonpublishing.co.uk.
We live in incredibly interesting times. The business world is changing rapidly and offers countless opportunities today, as well as countless threats. Yet, as some of the wise people featured in this book have commented, business fundamentals remain the same: it is about giving customers what they want and earning a sensible profit for doing so. I firmly believe that the classic business strategies included here remain as useful as when they were first written; when blended with the best in contemporary thinking it should lead to resounding business success.
