Finding a developer job that youll love sounds like it should be easy. All you need is someone with money who will pay you to write code.

The problem is that every employer and position is a little different. Teams work differently, they expect different things, and the companies prioritize different things. This means that theyre all looking for different skills, personalities, and experience levels to make things work when they write software.

To make things worse, companies often dont really know what they want, so they follow the hiring practices of their former bosses and recommendations from Human Resources. This means that if youre new or have some extra hurdles to overcome, it can be extremely difficult to convince them that you can do the job. Furthermore, if they dont know what they want, then they mostly hire on how they feel about you at the end of the interview.

To overcome these problems, programmers looking for a job need to know what theyre looking for and how to find companies that match up with what they need. Then, they need to find ways around the traditional hiring model so they can prove themselves without being caught up in the process of checking the boxes for Human Resources and inexperienced hiring managers.

The first chapter has you put into place the things that will put you in the best position to find and take advantage of opportunities to meet people who are looking to hire. The next part of this book will walk you through the process of identifying the Big Three things that you should be looking for in potential employers. Then, well show you how to find companies that match up with your Big Three. Finally, well help you get around the common issues with hiring processes and guide you through negotiating a great salary at the company of your dreams.

Many developers post their resumes to job boards or other job listings and rarely get called in for interviews. Others are able to get interviews, but never get the offer. And, most developers dont even know where to start.

If youre not getting the results you want, you need to try a different job search process.

Our job search process avoids all of the issues youre likely to encounter with the Spray and Pray strategy of sending your resume to everyone and hoping they get back to you.

Plus, in the first chapter, it delivers 3 concrete steps to jumpstart your job search.

The authorCharles Max Woodhas been a web developer since 2005. He has used these techniques to find dozens of full-time jobs and remote freelancing clients as a software developer. This process has worked over and over again to find the jobs and clients that he was looking for.

He has also coached dozens of developers into finding jobs they love.

Charles has also worked with many employers to help them find developers that match their needs and has hired a number of developers for projects at Devchat.tv and as a developer team lead at various companies.

Charles is the host of a number of podcasts about software development and has talked to developers, designers, technical managers and thought leaders about both technical topics and soft skills. This requires him to stay up-to-date both in the programming world and the job market.

Many students found jobs within a few weeks of consulting with Charles who had been looking for jobs for 6 months or more. Theyve built portfolios that demonstrate both what they are capable of and an ongoing commitment to learning. They have also identified companies that provide what theyre looking and landed jobs they are still happily working at.

One example is David. David knew that his current job was going to end within a year. He wanted to know what he could do to find companies that needed Project Managers and make the job transition as seamless as possible. After going through Charles course, he was able to identify the kinds of companies he wanted to work at, topics they were interested in, and began making videos on YouTube discussing Project Management techniques to prepare himself for a successful job search.

Ken is from an area that doesnt have a large, vibrant tech community. Finding a programming job nearby was nearly impossible. After taking this course, he was able to identify the kind of employer he was looking for. He updated his resume and his interview skills, then began focusing his attention on companies he could work for remotely from where he lives.

Our job search process will begin by providing you 3 ways to start your job search that will build the foundation for you to find a great job and allow you to take advantage of any opportunities that come your way while you take the next steps in finding your dream programming job.

It then expands into helping you identify companies that provide the type of job you want. It will show you how to conduct a targeted job search aimed at getting you a job at one of these companies within 2 weeks to 2 months.

It will show you how to build a portfolio that attracts employers and gets you noticed. Then, youll get a step-by-step walkthrough on meeting people who work for the companies you want, preparing for interviews, and negotiating your salary.

Dont be the typical bootcamp graduate that spends 6 months applying to every job that comes open, becoming frustrated because no one will get back to you. We can shorten this process by helping you level up, build a portfolio, and find companies to apply to that line up with what you your career goals.

Often, when someone starts looking for a job, opportunities start finding them. Most of the time its because they start doing things that put them in a position to meet people who work for companies that are hiring. But sometimes, its just the way things work.

In order to create more of these opportunities and to more easily take advantage of them when they arise, I recommend you immediately begin doing three things:

Attending a Users Group

Working on a Side Project

Updating Your Resume

To explain why, I need to delve briefly into what a job is and how employers hire.

We go into depth in on how employers find programmers to hire. Im going to summarize the relevant points for understanding why you need to do these particular things first.

Hiring managers tend to hire the people they can most easily reach. That means hiring people recommended by people they trust and hiring people they meet in life. If theyre attending Users Groups or if they have employees that attend, then being at the Users Group immediate moves you closer to the person making the hiring decision. Otherwise, you have to send your resume in like everyone else and hope you get picked.

Once they find someone they think they can hirehopefully, thats you, they have to make sure that you can do the job. This is where your resume, side projects, and interview skills come in. If you have things on your resume that demonstrate that youve done some of the things they need done at work, theyre more likely to hire you.
