Chapter 1 How to Start a Conversation

We are going to start from the very beginning. In order to have a conversation, you will need to start one.

You might think that this is the hardest step of the entire process, but you can make it very easy by applying the advice from this chapter.

What You Should Know Before You Start a Conversation

You Are in Control

It is going to be much easier to start a conversation if you feel more confident. Think of it like this, when you are in a meeting in a room full of strangers, the chances are that they feel exactly like you. Hell, they are probably even more shy and self-aware!

How can you become more confident that you can start a conversation? Begin by talking to your friends and people you already know. See how easy it is to initiate a conversation with them? Then why do you think its going to be harder with strangers?

Your goal should be to look outgoing, confident and cool. Believe that you are a master of starting a conversation. Thats what all other alpha males (and females) do.

Turn That Frown Upside Down

Youve surely heard that body language plays a major role in how people react to you. That is completely true. Three things you want to apply in any situation are:

Always smile

Maintain a good posture

Dont keep your arms crossed

By applying these, you will send a message that you are confident, secure and approachable. Youll also appear cheerful, and who doesnt like people with a jolly spirit? Be careful, Im not saying laugh out loud at a business meeting. Adjust your attitude in accordance where you are, but make sure not to look frowned.

Lets take a look at the results of a survey conducted in the United States. When asked whats the friendliest thing a person can do when meeting a stranger, 87% of people answered SMILE.

If you think about it, it makes sense. When you scan a room full of people, those with a smile on their face will look more like a conversation material than the ones wearing a frown.

Politeness Goes a Long Way

Its nothing new that you need to be polite, but Im talking about adjusting your behavior to the social situation you are currently in. A polite approach in business means that you should introduce yourself and shake hands with the other person(s). On the other hand, you might skip this at a party and start the conversation with a witty remark. Of course, you should always make sure not to be interruptive or rude.

Studies show that it takes only 5 seconds for a person to form an impression about you. That impression if finalized within the first minute and it is very hard to change it afterward. That is why you need to show the nicest and best part of you for a first impression.

Stay Focused
